393954 2005-10-06 16:19:00 I recently slapped together a computer:

-P5WD2 Premium motherboard
-Pentium 4 LGA775 660 3.6 GHz 800 FSB
-2 GB PC2-4200 unbuffered Crucial ram
-80 and 160 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA harddrives and a 200 GB Maxtor UATA harddrive
-Asus Extreme N7800 GTX Top Video Card
-Seasonic S12-500 ATX Power Supply
-Scythe Ninja CPU cooler

I originally was using a Conquerer FX 5200 PCI GeForce FX video card while I awaited the arrival of the Asus Extreme. The computer ran flawlessly for a few days. Once the Asus video card arrived, I installed it and immediately after the installation the computer will no longer turn-on. The onboard LED light flashes green, which indicates that the computer is in a "sleep" mode or "soft-off" mode. The only cable I moved to insert the video card was the IDE controller for the Maxtor harddrive. I have triple checked all connections and cannot find anything out of place. I am trying to avoid dropping extra dough to send the computer to an expert - especially if there exists a quick fix to this issue. Any ideas/input would be greatly appreciated.

You have connected the 6pin power connector to the graphics card?
Whats the amps on the 12v for the PSU? Might not be enough...

Put the other card back in and check its still boots OK. And check the BIOS settings for graphics....its on PCI-E as main VGA slot?

393956 2005-10-06 19:17:00 Can you get into POST?

Cheers :)

393957 2005-10-06 19:39:00 Hey pctek,

Thanks for the reply. The ninja is awesome - especially with a nexus silent fan on it. Concerning the power supply, here's a link to the specs:
www.silentpcreview.com
I've checked and asus requires at least 13A on the +12V1 and +12V2 leads. The Seasonic S12-500 has 17A and 16A on the +12V1 and +12V2, respectively. So, I have enough juice for my system.
The 6-pin is seated correctly as is the card in the motherboard. As a last resort I'll remove the asus 7800 top - it is a major pain in the ass to install the card in my tower: ThermalTake Kandalf full tower.
I am using, for the most part, preset BIOS settings, which means the PCI-E is set as the main VGA slot...I think. I'll recheck the P5WD2 Premium user guide when I get home tonight. Again, thanks for your input.

Hey jameskan,

Thank you, as well, for the reply. I'm sorry but I'm not certain what you are asking. My computer knowledge is most definitely lacking: what is POST?

From www.computerhope.com (http://)

The computer POST (Power On Self Test) which tests the computer insuring that it meets the necessary system requirements before booting up. If the computer fails the POST the computer then returns a beep code indicating what is causing the computer not to post the POST. Generally if the computer POSTs properly you will receive a single beep (with some computer BIOS manufacturers it may beep twice).
To be frank, I'm not too familiar with POST, perhaps it is wiser to ask other members.

Cheers :)

393959 2005-10-07 02:48:00 Howdy folks,

For those of you even mildly interested, I removed the Asus video card and reinstalled the Conquerer FX card. There has been no change in the status of the computer. It still will not boot. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

393960 2005-10-07 02:53:00 At what stage in the boot process does it stall?

Does anything happen?, any on screen activity?, beeps?

Anyhow, I would reset the bios, Look in the motherboard manual, it will specify a jumper that does it,usually located near the battery.

393961 2005-10-07 03:36:00 Hey Metla,

Much thanks for the reply . I apologize for not being as clear as I should be . The computer simply will not turn on - period . The LED flashes green on the motherboard; however, my computer will not turn on after I depress the power button . I've checked and rechecked all the internal connections and it all appears copacetic . I imagine I could be over-looking something simple .

I cleared the RTC RAM by removing the onboard battery and repositioning the jumper cap, as per the instructions in the user's manual - still no luck . I'm quickly running out of ideas, time, and patience . I think I will have to just suck it up and fork over some dough to my local computer gurus .

To all you that have taken the time to respond, thank you very much for your ideas and assistance .

393963 2005-10-07 03:50:00 Yeah, I was afraid that was a possibility. But, how would inserting a video card cause such an event? Maggot (9026)
