393883 2005-10-06 08:36:00 Hi i have a Socket 478 Pentium 4 2GHz, and which i've just taken the basic heatsink off, and want to put a new one on. The one i've got is a Intel P4 CPU Cooler Titan. I just have a question, what do i clean the cpu with? To remove all the thermal paste that was on them originally. And when i apply the paste, do i cover the whole cpu? or just the part in the middle? and what is the best thing to use? thanks. Sleepy (7202)

What to clean it with... we use de-natured alcohol, with either toiletpaper or cottonbuds (just make sure there is nothing left behind)
How much thermal grease to apply... enough to thinly cover the contact surface between the cpu and heatsink (usually just a small area)
Best thermal grease... I'm not sure but I hear Arctic Silver is one of the better ones

393886 2005-10-06 11:51:00 Yes u need just clean upper side of the CPU with alcohol and then put a white specific grease on the upper side and install new heatsink. Goodluck :) romanz (9022)
393887 2005-10-06 19:19:00 Isopropyl Alcohol - you can buy it from chemist shops for about $3.50 a bottle. Do NOT use anything else other than this.
I avoid the paper as it tends to shred, a cloth (not nylon) moistened with the isopropyl alcohol.
Thermal paste usually comes in a syringe type thing, its either white or silver usually.
Only use a tiny bit, its meant to have a thin film over where the HSF touches the CPU when the HSF is placed on top. Not bits oozing out all over the place.

393888 2005-10-06 22:59:00 Squirting a tiny bit of paste, say two match-head sized bits is often recommended, and relying on the pressure of the heatsink to spread it. But I've done it by using my finger to smear a really fine film over it.

I've also used meths and tissue paper to clean the cpu from the left-over gunk - not sure why it's not suggested by others. But isopropyl alcohol would've been my best bet if I'd had any at the times I've done it.

393889 2005-10-06 23:16:00 The best thing I think would be to use this: www.arcticsilver.com

It's had really good reviews by tomshardware and such.

But I'm not sure you can get it in NZ.

Because anything else - like meths can eat at the components.

393892 2005-10-07 00:15:00 I use iso on a lint free cloth.

I would use less then 2 matchheads worth of grease as well, more like one(though depends on how big the surface is), which i then spread with an old credit card.

I then rub about the same about into the heatsink with a plastic bag,and then wipe the excess off with my trusty cloth.
