394269 2005-10-08 04:40:00 Vista beta?... you could just download a shell style like Windowblinds or themeXP, sounds like it would do just as well (the transparent borderless Vista' style is nice with it's little glowing buttons and thingies!)

As for Linux, tried out the Linspire distro a few weeks ago, would be great if my progs like Coreldraw (and no the Gimp or whatever is NOT the same) and things like my new colour laser printer worked with it. Until the day Linux obtains 'universal support' I'm stuck with WinXP, but hey I like eyecandy, so maybe I should go buy an expensive Mac (God... did I just say that? Metla will wash my mouth out!). It's also a load of crap that Macs are better for pro graphic work... I know because I've used them- it's total snobbery and 'group elitism' on the part of the pros. (just imagine a whole lot of creatively shorn and quoiffed sheep all trying to look different from the masses, but jumping the same fence blindly one after the other)

But then- anything truely beautiful is ultimately useless (I'm talking about OSs here I think)

I'll stick to my flashy American eXPerience with advertising badges everywhere, but just a little overweight and running on four big bald tyres. At least I know it will get there eventually if it doesn't belch once too often and have a heart attack :waughh:

394270 2005-10-08 05:08:00 Shortcircuit, whats funny is you mention "universal support", yet the hardware support in Linux on my 64-bit system is FAR better than the WinXP support.

The Soundcard has only just recently been working (Wasnt for three months), Graphics card was a ***** to get setup. TV Tuner Card was a no-go altogether. Yet you speak of Universal support?

YMMV, but aside from WinModems, I think linux support for hardware aint bad!

Then again, maybe you're right, we're just elitists ;)

394271 2005-10-08 05:13:00 I just love these threads .... pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

The best operating system is the one that performs the tasks and functions that you require of it at a level that suits your user ability. No one OS suits all.

Agreed. Currently I use WinXP for most things. Having a considerable investment in software which will run under a windows environment and it works for me then I see no need to change. This does not mean to say that I can't dual boot to have a play though. Noted that one program I bought for MSDos still works under WinXP. Check out Terminate 5.0 for fidonet.

I did in fact progam a Burroughs 3500 under MCP using COBOL some time back.
Worked for the Waterfront Commision (paid the wharfies) TC500 terminals linked via a mainframe to all NZ ports and British Leyland NZ later for warranties and parts.

Suggest getting another hard drive and dual boot to learn. Just don't stuff up the installion that works!!!

394273 2005-10-08 06:24:00 Nothing beats DOS.

Agreed. Have we got a DOS that will install on a 200 Gig hard drive though?
Anyway it will take the fun out of editing the registry won't it!

Having said that a lot of boot CDs like the UBCD uses PCDOS and can at least do it with a 120Gig hard drive.

There again can I run MSOffice 2003 under any version of DOS?

394274 2005-10-08 07:21:00 Sorry Chill, I didn't mean Linux users were elitist... more like Mac users (wait for the flaming OSX thrown through my window!).

I know you're way up there with Linux, but in (my) real world I'd like to go out and spend $1,000 on a laser printer and KNOW it's going to work on my OS.

That's the beginning and end of it for me, until the major hardware vendors and program makers get on the band wagon for Linux and you get that support out of the box it's a loosing battle from where I sit :(

I really think Linux is the way of the future... I was hoping that it got there when I tried Linspire (and a few others), but it's still got a way to go.

Don't get me wrong, I really don't like a lot of the things Microsoft/Windows foist on you... and it seems to be more with each new OS, but most of them can be switched off/shut down/locked out with a bit of thought and perseverence and if you don't much around too much XP runs OK (God- I'd almost say it's reliable!)

When you're using DOS you don't need a 200Gb HDD. After all 200Gb HDDs were invented to fit more MS bloatware onto.
But of course you just partition it into 100 2Gb partitions.
And why would you need Office? You use EDIT.
Or copycon.
None of these silly fonts and things....

Actually anyone notice according to the votes everyones a Linux fan?
And whats with win3.1?

Heh the funny thing is that printing support is pretty good these days. Of course if you spend $1000 and don't get a postscript printer then you are mad ;) Oh, and some of that vendor support is due to the fact that OS X uses CUPS as its printing system :D
