394250 2005-10-07 08:14:00 Try Knoppix then. A live distro runs off a CD. Take out the CD, remove the OS. mark c (247)

394253 2005-10-07 10:32:00 What are the best Operating Systems on the market at the moment or are worth getting?

Cheers

You've got a cheek lad "Cheers", that's ban bait, if anything is .

I just love these threads . . . .

The best operating system is the one that performs the tasks and functions that you require of it at a level that suits your user ability . No one OS suits all .

:stare: Jen Jen Jen Jen, Jen . I'm very disappointed, the poor person is obviously crying out for help, they want answers to their question, not philosophical musings . Get stuck in, say it

9 times I have written a post in this thread and then deleted it .

You can all thank me for that .

Anyhow, XP home is the best choce for the average user . I won't go into detail . If you doubt it then try a Linux .

Apple gear doesn't apply unless you already own a mac in which case your already using an Apple OS and cant really try the alternatives . Mac heads claim its better . . . . which is like asking someone in a holden hat ,holden shirt, holden pants ,holden sunglasses, sporting a Holden tattoo and who has changed their name to Holden which is better . . . . . Ford or Holden?

Nine goes at it Met's, waste of energy, once was too much

zahmad, pal, It really depends what you want to do, really .

If you want flat out gaming, Win2k or XP will do . Pay up pal and join the queue . Personally I'd go for win2k, just because ther's slightly less cludge .

If you want security and productivity, and something that is light weight, wont take up too much of your valuable resources; somethinhg like Mepis (a Linux distro) will be perfect  , plus, you can do some pretty good multi media and graphics out of the box or minimal configuration but, without the DRM BS . (you can play games too, but, don't expect the ;latest and geatest but . do expect a tiny bit of config work) .

If you want something fast and on the edge, have a look at Yoper Linux, a good old NZ Distro (it will do all of the preceeding faster, but more like a junky) .

If you want a learning experience and blinding speed and, as stable or flacky as you want it and, if you learn well, then Gentoo your baby . You can make it anything you want . Can do everthing the above will do, except all the latest and greatest game .

Wait for google!

I gave the last one a crack, well I think it was the last one(??) . Twas ok, it worked kind of, once I got the GUI up everything looked pretty normal to simple old me .

So, what you got in store for us Chill? Presuming we have the option to install (for klutz's I mean), lean and mean, optimisation, configurable, stable (oxymoron), fast, fast or, maybe fast :D Will you have a repository (ok, that;'s not Gentoo speak, but you know what I mean) . Do you want a feeder?

394257 2005-10-07 20:10:00 Well, my biggest problem ATM is getting PS/2 Mice working, and also getting rid of this one non-crucial error at boot time. I also need to re-export the path on logon so that qtparted is gonna work.....

Otherwise, its looking pretty slick. Ive been told its nice and fast compared to most. You can emerge applications while you have the LiveCD booted, so I emerge'd qtorrent one day just to give it a whirl. It works great! Just FYI - You'll have access to all of Gentoo's Apps/Packages (Known as ebuilds). No point in re-inventing the wheel right, and the current 14,000 odd packages do me quite nicely.

Will have to work on an installation How-To eventually also. I did a HD-Install in about 7 minutes the other day. Cant wait to get the ball rolling with it, bean a HUGE learning curve for me, but a great one at that :)

Watch out Bill! Chill is coming..... :D :D :D
