393986 2005-10-08 06:54:00 Video card has no bearing on what version of DX you can install.

And the source engne runs fine on non-DX9 cards provided DX9 itself is installed.

The problem is that the online installer only downloads and installs files that have newer versions, so if you have a coruption that is triggering the game to mis-identify the dx version they run a good chance of simply not being reinstalled by the online installer.

You will need the offline install of DX9.0c.

And delete steam and related software off your system, right down to registry entries.

Quite often all the fiddling in the world can't force the correct version of DX9 to be detected by software that your installing, but thats all in the next chapter.

393987 2005-10-08 07:22:00 And while Im here...

You can extract the DX install files to a local folder useing Winrar or other similar apps, Rather then running the logic defying install from MS (throw it into a temp file, let you search for it....)

393988 2005-10-08 13:20:00 oh elephant, i was only joking about the CD keys for steam, they just p@$$ me off , especially how they have taken over the good mods and comercialized them all :(

and also as metla said, doesnt matter what vid card i have, as direct X is like a translating service between vid cards and the pc and such, well kinda, right metla?

anyways, my problem was that the downloader never stated where direct x was being dwnlded to. and never gave me the option of choosing where to download to, and once it was completed the was no auto-install like i expected, just a finish button... so stupid, even my microsoft standards... so I guess I'll run a search, its prob in temp... thanks all

393989 2005-10-08 20:56:00 If it never asked you where to download to, then if it even did download it's got to be somewhere in your temporary internet files (location variable depending on what browser you use) Agent_24 (57)
393990 2005-10-08 22:12:00 As i said, the online installer only updates when there are new versions, so if it scanned your install and was happy with it....Nothing else happens, and all there is in the temp files is a 322kb installer. Metla (12)
393991 2005-10-17 20:50:00 Hi, I have been having a Big problem with directx failing to install.

I had 9.0b installed and all my games ran fine (doom3/cs:s/etc).

Then 9.0c came out and cs:s and battlefields2 refused to load (they wanted 9.0c).

I've downloaded 9c from various sources and everytime, when asked to install, it would run through the install wizard and get to the instalation complete screen (but in a fraction of a second and without actually installing).

Running dxdiag showed I was running 9.0b still.

In the end I thought that perhaps completly removing directx would allow me to install 9.0c without issues.

I was wrong, I have removed directx and now no games will work and no version of dx (downloaded or even older versions on cds) will install.

Anybody have a clue as to why it pretends to install and any possible solution?

Thanks
James

393992 2005-10-18 00:28:00 This is aknown problem with Directx 9.0c.
Try this.
Download the full version of 9.0b. Extract to a folder 9 (call it D9.0b or something)
Do the same for 9.0c.

The copy these files from the 9.0b folder into the 9.0c folder:

dxsetup.exe
dsetup.dll
dsetup32.dll

overwriting the existing ones.
Now run the 9.0c install.

Theres heaps of posts about it.
MS is having a good week, aren't they - first this then the MS updates hassle.

393993 2005-10-18 00:40:00 And turn on cryptography service in your sevices. Make it Auto and Started. (You can turn it back off later) pctek (84)
393994 2005-10-18 10:22:00 Thanks for the quick reply much appreciated .

I did exactly as you said but still no joy, I think my problem runs deeper than that as no version of dx will install, not even 7 . They all skip the actual instalation .

I dont know much about cryptography service, but I finally found it and it was already on auto and started so I left it alone .

Im stumped .
