| 394155 | 2005-10-07 05:10:00 | This the drive that holds your operating system? For starters, use Add/Remove to remove any old games, programs or utilities that you have installed in the past and do not require anymore. Then backup any personal data that hasn't been accessed for sometime to a CD or DVD. Clean out temporary files etc and follow this up with a disk defrag. With XP and if you have System Restore enabled, then you can purge all but the last restore point if your system is currently stable. You can find this option under Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup > Advanced tab. You will need to reboot to free up the space. |

| 394158 | 2005-10-07 09:02:00 | When I was a newbie I used to leave anything that I didn't know about alone. Now that I am a fractionally post-newbie I look at anything I don't know about and find about it, if I don't need it or like it I ditch it. My policy is to keep the machine as simple as possible. I'm a lean user. I like ditching stuff. Hey we all started on MS. ( cf: bloatware.) |

In fact it would be good to do these once a week or so as the defragger needs 15% free space to work and once u run out of space troubleshooting options become limited. |

If you have System Restore turned on this can take a lot of room up as it makes backups each time. I found my 15GB partition with just Windows XP Pro put on it fulling up very quickly and had over 12GB on it. Till I turned it off and then it went back to 4.8GB |
