| 394020 | 2005-10-06 21:24:00 | Hi All. I would like to use a Dick Smith XH1154 pci modem to get online with Linux. Would be great to hear from anyone about what recent distros this modem works with? I am new to Linux. |

| 394021 | 2005-10-06 21:30:00 | It looks like a software modem but I could be wrong. Linux is known for being iffy about software modems. Having said that you may get luck and it will work. I t does have an Intel chipset so you stand a good chance. cheers chiefnz |

| 394022 | 2005-10-06 22:00:00 | It's a hardware modem, and DSe have Linux drivers to download. In saying that, I haven't got one, so I can't say anything from experience as such. | somebody (208) | ||
| 394023 | 2005-10-06 22:58:00 | Ummm . Aaaaah . :rolleyes: here we go again . :groan: The XH1154 is an Intel HAM winmodem . People have had troubles compiling the DSE supplied driver module for it . (Use the PressF1 Search with "XH1154 linux" to see some of the threads . ) Part of the problems have come from the fact that the installation script which comes with it assume a very limited number of distributions . Others have come from users who haven't got the compiler, or the "kernel headers" installed . :( I take it that you actually have this modem card, and don't want to buy another if you can avoid it . Don't give up . . . I don't think the modem is particularly difficult for Linux . (It's a popular chipset, so the work has been done on it, producing the "Intel-536" module) . But different distributions do different things to use it . See what www . linmodems . org have got to say about the Intel HAM chipset . Even try their search for "DSE XH1154" ! I think I'd try Mandrake 10 . 1 . Mandrake 10 . 0 already had the module for a DSE "OEM USB" Wifi unit I've got . Just found this posting on PressF1 (forums . pcworld . co . nz/archive/index . php/t-58136 . html) . . . looks encouraging . :D |
