394680 2005-10-09 07:10:00 Just setup 802.11g wireless connection and it took 4m 50s to transfer 11 mpeg files total of 518mb across wireless network. Should it take this long??? If not what could I be doing wrong…. Annanz (3044)
394681 2005-10-09 07:23:00 What does the connection speed say?

If it's 54Mbps, then 518MB x 8 = 4144MBits
4144 / 54 = 76.74 Seconds = 1 minute & 17 seconds

It is quite likely that your connection speed is less than 54Mbps, or, data is being lost during transfer and it needs to re-send it several times.

394682 2005-10-09 07:34:00 Connection speed says 54Mbps and I have got strong connection. The other computer is only 8 feet away. Intend to move the other computer to another room eventually, just easier to set up everything in the same room. Annanz (3044)
394683 2005-10-09 07:54:00 I know my wireless connection takes a while to transfer large files - don't know if it takes as long as yours does though. I have been told at one stage that there are lots of factors influencing data transfer speed, other than what speed the computer shows - although exactly what these factors are I'm not too sure about. somebody (208)
394684 2005-10-09 08:21:00 count yourself lucky, my wireless would probably take over 40 minutes for files that big.

im using crappy cards though (got 2 for 60 bux).

Not quite as simple as that. TCP/IP wraps data up in packets so all this will add extra over head to just the simple (518 x 1024) x 8. Thats MB to bytes and then to bits. Depends on packet sizes set how much overhead.

Also the connection speed will vary as the signal fades in and out. I have seen mine go from 36Mbps to 54 to 48 in a few secs.

394686 2005-10-09 19:20:00 That speed on wireless sounds fantastic, they adervtise 54 but in most people get about 1/3 of that. You cant even get 100% on ethernet. Rob99 (151)
394687 2005-10-09 19:41:00 Just did a 513Mb transfer over 54G distance is 1.2Kms time 28 minutes 9 seconds. I know I have a little water in my cantenna so this probally slowed things a little. Rob99 (151)
