Do you guys and gals that are computer techs stress test pc's when theyre in your shop to make sure theyre perfoming ok and if so, how or what to you use to test them.
Just thought that if theres a program or a method then i might give mine a go to see if its up to scratch.

This is what i've done myself.

I've ran 3DMark03. (Got an embarrising low score but i only have a Ti4200 64mb ram).

Loaded up large mb photos in Photoshop and applied all sorts of filters to them to see if it could do it without locking up/crashing. (Worked allright,no crashes or freezeing).

Rendered a 4gb avi video file to mpeg2 using TMPGEnc Plus. (Converted ok, no probs.)

Probably not the way but thought it wouldn't hurt anyway.

Oh, thought i'd give my spec's incase needed;
HP 762n
P4, 2.26ghz
512mb ram
80gb hdd
Ti4200 64mb graphics card
Leadtek tv2000 deluxe tv capture card
Firewire card
On board sound
Basic Genius 2 channel speakers
DVD rom-oem
DVD rw-Liteon
17in crt monitor
XP home sp2

394608 2005-10-08 22:28:00 I've just downloaded a program of the PC World website called "CPU Stability Test.exe".
Found here....
www.pcworld.com

Will run it this arvo. If anyones tried this test and has some advice like its ok or dont use it, then i'm all ears.

I realise techs dont have the time to run stress tests on every pc that comes thru the door and would only do a test (if there is one) if theres something in particular thats causing problems.

As you could probably tell, i'm bored. :-)

Thats the one jen :D
I was really just curious to know if there is a way(s) to do tests like that. Just to see if everythings working as well as it should be, if it can be made better etc etc.
I've got the little guy in white on one shoulder saying "If it aint broke, dont fix it" and the little guy in red on the other shoulder saying "go on, tweak it".

Still cant get hyperlinks and smilies working in here by the way. Not sure if the one up there will work?. I entered it in manually.

Well look at that, it worked!.

Yep. I don't run masses of tests on builds. But I trust my hardware.
I do run some things on repairs PCs depending on what I suspect the problem is. I have one that use just CPU and ram - not a comprehensive test like memtest (which I also have) but its good for seeing if its going to crash and eleiminates the O/S.
Then theres HDD testers, specific other testers.
Usually though most of them are screamingly obvious when they pass through here.

3DMark is the most fun one though. Run 3dMark 05 - not the test - the demo. Quite pretty...

394614 2005-10-09 00:25:00 Download the INSERT Rescue CD. It has a program in it called "stress". Guess what it does?

It does it very well too, and I used it to find that my CPU on my old laptop had been installed wrong and was overheating. Worth looking at, even if you have no linux knowledge.
