394618 2005-10-09 00:55:00 Installing Windows on a new comp is a big stress test, then 3dmark if it has a real video card, also may get the temps up around gaming levels.

On a repair, then just something specific to whats its issues are.

For a general stress test then there is an app called burnin that (tries) to run every component at its limits, It fails on the graphic side of things though, I have had cards that suffer from heat and ram issues that have sailed though.

394622 2005-10-09 01:42:00 The little user handbooks described the tests done on PDP-8s by Digital Equipment Corporation ("DEC") in the days when they made real computers.

24 hours in a hot box (at 130 degrees F), 24 hours in a cold box (at or below freezing), then a drop from 3 feet. If it gave any errors in the memory test it was running throughout, it needed fixing.

394623 2005-10-09 02:28:00 Lazydog: My little red guy is saying "Go for it!"... hell, you can only blow the thing up.

PJ: I opted for a computer instead of a SWMBO, bonus was I didn't have to purchase a MIL... now what do I do?

Graham: liked the instructions you gave. I have a friend who works on a farm in Alexandria, apparently the temp range is about what you described and there would be no problem dropping the box off the back of a tractor a few times. Could be a good little 'tech business' :D

394624 2005-10-09 02:47:00 Whats a good way to stress test a computer?
That's easy. Just spend a few hours visiting porn, crack and warez sites, making sure you click on all the popups that promise "free access". Don't forget to sign up for everything offered, then download and install Incredimail, SmileyCentral and all the emoticons and screensaver thingies you can get your hands on.

After that the fun begins - you get to clean out all the junk your computer is infested with. :D

Can guarantee that you and your computer will feel pretty stressed out after that lot, especially when your credit card bill arrives. ;) :p

394625 2005-10-09 02:52:00 You could try infecting your PC with a whole lot of spyware and viruses and see if that gets the HDD + CPU going :D

Otherwise there's that small line of code which will max the CPU out on certain linux setups, but I cant remember it for the life of me :(
