| 395471 | 2005-10-12 07:03:00 | Yesterday as I was burning a DVD, the process stopped and an error message appeared. I cannot recall the exact wording but I think it was something like "Power configuration error." The DVD-R would not eject, so I turned off the PC and did the paper clip trick to remove it (slowly pushing a sraightened pclip into the tiny hole to open the tray). Today I discover that a data DVD or a commercial movie DVD cannot be read - not even using Explore via My Computer. Of course it cannot burn DVDs either. But it can read and burn CDs OK. Is there someway to diagnose or fix the DVD R/Writer, before I go ahead and replace it? Specs: OptoWrite 04001 8x, 14 months old. PC: WinXP, 3GHz, 1G RAM Thanks. |

Looks like a firmware update can fix this prob with this burner. According to google, it looks like this is a common prob/error with this particular burner. |

Thanks much for the quick and informative reply. I was using Nero to burn the DVD. Yes, it probably was "Power Calibration error." OK, guess I'll hunt for the Optorite web site and see whats up. A new driver to download, or uninstall reinstall the software? If I don't have to replace the unit I will be a very happy chappy. |

| 395474 | 2005-10-12 07:32:00 | :) Also bad media can also cause it. The site I had, showed the info, but when I copied and pasted the url here, you have to sign up to see the answers! hmm Or there's a prob with the laser itself. NOTE: XP's driver will be fine. The driver isnt the same as the firmware for the burner. The firmware for this burner maybe here www.optorite.com |

| 395475 | 2005-10-12 07:57:00 | Nah, the lasers on those suckers just wear out fairly quickly. Got one myself that I bought about 2 years ago now, the OptoRite DD0201. Great little burner that just loves cheap media after a firmware upgrade (I upgraded mine not long after purchase), but Ive heard a lot of people say similar problems arose from it. Time for a new if you ask me. |

The amount of hate I have for them is huge, Nearly everyone I sold developed an issue of some kind just out of warrenty and I had to replace them out of my pocket, I hate destributing crap gear, it makes me look bad, Its a hassle for the customer and it cost me hundreds of dollars to make good. |

If the laser or something else is stuffed, a new burner will be the order. Found this on QMB's site and wonder if it passes the Met-Test?.... | 395480 | 2005-10-12 08:35:00 | I nearly fell over Guess this means its a good one. ...! QMB also has a deal, $80 for a DVD writer plus a stack of 50 blanks. But black only. BTW, since it is dual layer I thought I'd have a look at the cost of each DVD, thinnking the cost would've come down. Ha! Who would use dual layer DVDs when single layers are so cheap? |
