395186 2005-10-11 02:29:00 Okay first off let me describe my problem. At random intervals my computer decides to hang. I've been paying attention to the details of it, and it seems to do it more often when I'm doing anything specific with windows, like the start menu or explorer, etc. Usually the pc speaker will beep once, then 5-10 seconds later everything on the screen will freeze except for the cursor, then another 5-10 seconds and the cursor freezes too. Another 5-10 seconds and it goes back to normal.

I've gotten the message "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" twice today, and I've gotten the BSOD twice this week, though I was never able to get any specifics on the error.

I intend to try a fresh format, but I need to backup my stuff first and that is going to be a while before I can get another HDD to back it up to.

Now for the specs:
AMD Athlon64 3500+, 2250 MHz
512MB RAM (unfortunately can't get the system to work with more. Haven't figured that one out yet either)
200g seagate sata drive
Abit k8t neo
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT
dvd+-r
cd drive
~Running Windows XP SP2

So I'm stumped by this problem and haven't figured out what would be causing it. I'm thinking it is probably something with the hardware but I don't know where to start.

395187 2005-10-11 02:36:00 Have you scanned for viruses/spyware?

Get Hijackthishttp://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

From here www.spywareinfo.com

Unzip it first then run it / then copy and paste the log here.

395188 2005-10-11 03:07:00 True to your name, you are rather speedy.

But yes, I forgot to mention. Ran an deep scan with avast and scanned with spysweeper.

Here is my log:

395189 2005-10-11 03:21:00 OK. Tick these entries in Hijackthis. Tick fix check (close the browser/s, then reboot).

I would also update Java. It's now upto 1.5.00.5

Doesn't look like anything nasty tho. See if anything hangs after this, if it does, it maybe hardware related somewhere, as u stated.

You're not overclocking are you?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
395190 2005-10-11 03:30:00 Nope, no overclocking going on. Gidgidonihah (9053)
395191 2005-10-11 03:39:00 Hmm ok . Umm Press ctrl-alt-del .

What program is using the most memory now?

Or go to control panel / admin tools / event viewer .

Highlight system / application on the left .

And to the right look for any Errors entries and double click on one where it crashed (If the system crashed) . Highlight it, press ctrl-c and copy and paste the info here .
Speedy Gonzales (78)
395192 2005-10-11 03:42:00 If you can't get the system to work with any more than 1 stick of 512 DIM, I am guessing you have a dual channel board? and if so the two dimms need to be identical (well most of the time) otherwise you won't get a post or instability.

As for the hanging, have you checked your temperatures, like the CPU and GPU temperatures?, also voltages if you know how?. May very well not be these things, but should be eliminated early in your fault finding process.
Battleneter (60)
395193 2005-10-11 06:58:00 everything looks normal in the task manager .

*edit* whoa, okay . I checked out the event viewer and there are errors galore in there . Most of which are the following 2:

1 . An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation .
2 . The device, \Device\Scsi\viasraid1, did not respond within the timeout period .

As for the memory, when I built the comp, i bought 1 gig kingston in 2 sticks which are identical, so dual channel shouldn't be a problem .

I haven't checked the temps yet . I was going to through uguru that came with the board, but I don't have it installed, and I haven't got anything else installed yet . I could do it in the bios, but I want to monitor it in use .

As for voltages, I don't know how other then busting out the good old voltage meter .

395194 2005-10-11 08:12:00 You wouldn't happen to have an Asus Motherboard would you? Zippity (58)
395195 2005-10-11 10:03:00 No, it's an " Abit k8t neo " as mentioned in the specs of his first post. ;) pheonix (36)
