396386 2005-10-14 23:46:00 Hey Team!

last month i bought an Asus 1608P dvd writer, worked great !, and recently bought some princo dvd-r 8x speed discs. when i burnt them , they only burnt at 4x speed. Thought may need a firmware update so got the latest update which is 1.57 (previously had 1.4) .

And great, now burns at 8x, but played it in the dvd player and it came out with a decent jerky motion, burned at 6x and same result, and now 4x and same thing! also used more than 1 burning program (nero of course being the main one)

just burnt now 8x with excel 8x dvd-r (which ive never had a problem before) and same thing, it playback is jerky as hell!

Maybe flash back to 1.4 im thinking.

ive read that this drive is a rebadged pioneer dvr-109 and that its possible to crossflash?

Any ideas team!

Cheers

396387 2005-10-15 00:10:00 I use the same burner and the same firmware, no prob at all .

And yup, it is a rebadged Pioneer 109 .

I dont think the burner or the firmware, is the prob .

What DVD did you play the burned DVD's in? The burner itself?? And what program, did you use to play it??

Is your burner the OEM or retail burner? And did u download the firmware update, from the ASUS site, or from somewhere else?

396388 2005-10-15 03:07:00 i tried the dvds i burnt on a friends dvd player and they came out fine! so with the firmware upate they play fine on a friends dvd recorder (a budget DSE one) but play jerky on mine (panasonic 5 disc player 1 year and a half old)

i then flashed the writer to firmware revision 1 . 5, and burnt another 2 test dvds
, this is the next revision after the 1 . 4 that came on the writer, the princo dvd-rs burnt again 8x . tested it on my standalaone, played fine!

looks like youre right speedy, doesnt appear to be the writer or the firmware, but how my dvd player reads the dvd-r after the burn . not sure if its oem or retail, it was a asus 1608p that came in its box with all the usual asus extras

What id like to know is why going from 1 . 5 to 1 . 57, my panasonic dvd player (f-50) plays the dvd videos i makes jerky .

What if i flashed it with a pioneer dvr-109 firmware update, or are they the same as an asus anyway?

396389 2005-10-15 03:17:00 I think some of the firmware updates for the Pioneer and ASUS came out around the same time . BUT Pioneer's 1 . 57 came out 13/7/05, and ASUS on 22/8/05 .

Yup, not too sure whether its a good idea using Pioneer's update, even tho the 1608P is a rebadged 109 .

If it fails, thats the end of the ASUS and your warranty .

Where, or what is the source of the video you're burning? From an external source? If it is, is it from USB 2 / firewire?

Is anything connected to the same IDE connection as the ASUS?? If so, what?

Another cd/dvd or a hard drive? Or is the burner, by itself on the IDE connection?

396390 2005-10-15 06:52:00 i think its the new writing strategy in the firmware 1 . 57 that just means it makes it difficult for my panasonic standalone to read . the dvds i burnt on firmware 1 . 57 (using several programs also, nero, tmpg dvd author etc ) play fine even on a budget $50 transonic dvd standalone from the warehouse .

ive flashed it too version 1 . 5 so then i know that the dvds definately work . if i kept it at 1 . 57 . i wouldnt know if the dvd was ok unless i had another dvd player or i went to check it out at someone elses place , which is too much bother !

searched google and there are firmware hacks which can change the book type of a blank dvd whether it be +/- format to "dvd-rom" to make it more compatible for a dvd player to read correctly and smoothly .

any other knowledgable folks know about this? and naturally im aware if a firmware flash goes wrong, its time to buy another writer lol :-)

Cheers
