| 395892 | 2005-10-13 19:25:00 | I just got my adsl connected at the new house and on the dsl-302g modem box it warns that if I have a burglar alarm connected to the phone line, I'll need a technician to come and make some changes. Well I just discovered that the alarm here can be connected to a phone line, but don't know if it is. So: a) how can I check if it is? b) if it is, can it be disconnected? c) is there any way around this problem if it can't be disconnected? (without getting a technician in) d)will the problem only exist with this external modem, or will the same problem exist using an internal pci modem? e)if I have to get a technician in, what sort of cost is involved? f) what sort of problems can I expect if I just go ahead and try it? Thanks heaps! |

I didn't bother getting the techie in and now everytime the alarm tries to "dial home" it disconnects my ADSL. Luckily it does that at some ungodly hour so I'm usually asleep. Lo. |

Therefor no effect on ADSL. The problem usually occurs when the dialler is active. It will use the line to call the monitoring station..... 1/ Whenever the alarm is armed or disarmed 2/ If the alarm goes off 3/ Once every 24Hrs to "clock in" Normally, if wired right, it will disconnect the line into the house and use it for it's call. This is to stop anyone interfering with the call process from an outllet. As you have it wired, but not active, you have nothing to worry about. Even if it was active, and you did nothing, the only problem would be it dropping the ADSL for the duration of the call whenever an occurence 1,2,3 above. |

Also spoke to Jetstream helpdesk and they reckon it should still work but may be a bit intermittent. Problem now is that I still can't get this silly thing to work - it connects to PC fine via ethernet, but won't connect to Internet. What a pain. |

Got onto Xtra Jetstream helpdesk and they discovered a minor glitch, fixed it within 5 minutes. | Greg (193) | ||

The "three things" are: It dials out. How long it takes for a man in a security car to drive up. How much the callout charge is. :D |
