395875 2005-10-18 04:02:00 I got an 'el cheapo' tablet from DSE (under $100)... haven't used it with any hand writing software, but it's great for drawing and good resolution/pen sensitivity. I'd say try that before you blow $400 odd on a Wacom.
Hi Shortie! Thanks. Bought DSE tablet, but have not unpacked it yet. On the box it sais not about using it for converting to type.
Just wonder if any tablet in this moment in time gives acceptable results in conversion. But drawing also is interesting. Albeit Microsoft, I think, in word, has "convert" command. I assume they tried.

Thanks to all joined the thread.

395876 2005-10-18 04:20:00 Handwriting recognition is difficult. The Palm Graffiti is a good system because it trains the user to use its special character forms. With practice, you can get fast accurate entry. Free-form writing is much more of a programming problem.

I use a writing tablet. It doesn't need batteries, or MS Office. Warehouse Stationery often sell the last of a year's diaries for $1. :D With one of those and a pencil or pen you have a great information storage device. The major trouble is that I can't read my own writing. What chance would software have?

395877 2005-10-18 04:55:00 Graham That is what I do now. My writing is almost illegible. My printing is better. I write on lined paper on a clip board. When the mood is on me I scribble words down as fast as I can. Then when the Brain Ink runs out, I type it into Word. I am trying to shorten the process. I could just "Speak" it into the computer. One day a good enough programme will exist. Or speak into a "voice recorder" of some type. But then I still have to type it into Word. Not easy. PJ Poppa John (284)
395878 2005-10-18 05:00:00 Office 2002 and most probably Office 2003 support speech recognition and handwriting recognition. I tried the Speech recognition in Word 2002 yesterday.

All you have to do is install the Speech engine, from within Word / Tools menu / Speech, and then get a mic and configure the mic / speech wizard to use it.

I have tried that, albeit with a Yorkshire accent . Had to stop after a while . Maryann would persist in giggling . It has to be very quiet for it to work .

So for the moment I will keep trying with the Tablet .

I have got Wtiting & Printing on screen, but cannot make it change to text . I am obviously missing that one piece of program .

A thought . . . . . . For speech recog you have to train the computor by speaking the 'training passages' in it . Wouldn't writing recog nead some thing similar?? PJ

ERROR MESSAGE.... The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Click Ok, & then close dialog boxes to continue.

There are no apparent dialog boxes showing open. PJ

Minimise any open windows, the dialogue box will probably be under the window that is currently active.

395884 2005-10-18 07:47:00 SUCCESS ...sort of. I have got it working. More by a fluke than anything. I went into Word on-line help & printed all the info on handwriting Recog. Found info about :Writing Pad" & "Write Anywhere". I followed these instructions & hey presto. Bloody hilarious tho. The quality of the writing is obviously important. I cannot see any "Training Programme" anywhere. PJ Poppa John (284)
