397263 2005-10-18 02:39:00 how seamless is an upgrade from XP home to XP pro
and what do i use, full installer?
Mirddes (10)
397264 2005-10-18 02:42:00 Either an upgrade or the full version of Pro should work.

Either install over Home, or do a clean install of XP Pro. (if its the full version). Dunno if an upgrade works from a clean install. It might.

397266 2005-10-18 02:56:00 Hmm, cant u boot into safe mode with Home and set something like permissions etc?

Like what Pro does?? Then reboot into XP and do whatever?

As long as the hdd is formatted in NTFS .

Not too sure whether it'll break SP2, never had to install Pro, over Home, as I use Pro atm .

397267 2005-10-18 03:05:00 iirc you can do that in safe mode, but its messy, sorta feels like a beta(a m$ beta remember). id feel better with i tried and tested option, that and last time a played aroudn in there i screwed alot of stuff up Mirddes (10)
397268 2005-10-18 03:10:00 You can make a slipstreamed CD with SP2, but this may work better if u do a clean install .

Not too sure if it'll do the same, if u do it from within XP . If u install over a currently installed OS .

397269 2005-10-18 03:15:00 Make sure you backup all your important data before you do this ;) stu161204 (123)
397270 2005-10-18 03:16:00 from the sounds of where this is going, i think i shoudl wait till i get a spindle of blank DVDs, back up a fair portion of my data, and make a partition just for windows and have a clean install.

are there any good defrag apps that allow you t move the data to on part of your hdd.
with teh standard defrag tool you get it in a few places with gaps here and tehre, quite messy. id like to have it all at one end

397271 2005-10-18 03:23:00 It'll be better to buy a bigger hdd, and partition it .

Or get another hdd ( if u only have 1), and use one for Windows and put everything else on the other hdd . (files / updates you've downloaded etc)

Moving data especially program files or even backing up to dvd or cd doesnt always work . It's better to reinstall programs, that have already been installed .

397272 2005-10-18 04:28:00 i want to have an account for people to play games on, and ONLY games, touch nothign else. that sort of thing, im pretty sure (from the looks of the control they ahev at school) that its possible

Theres a lot more to that control than just xp pro !

For a normal home user xp home is fine and you can do want you are suggesting, it depends on xphome's setup ie ntfs or fat32 is the first thing that springs to mind, then there are the registry edits (not for the faint hearted)
