397274 2005-10-18 01:29:00 I am considering upgrading my moboard. The boards I am looking at have Serial ATA. Can I still use my 120GB H/Drive? Will I need new Cables and converter plugs?
thanks for any info.

397275 2005-10-18 01:51:00 Yup, SATA will work alongside ATA, if the mobo has IDE and SATA onboard.

If the 120gb u have now is IDE, u may have to do a repair install or reformat, if u use XP. With the new mobo.

You'll need new data cables for SATA, (which may come with the mobo) as they're not the same as IDE.

And also a power adaptor for SATA. (which may or may not come with the mobo as well).

397276 2005-10-18 01:58:00 If you're asking if you can hook your existing ATA drive to an SATA cable the answer is no.
But as Speedy says if you buy a board that has both ATA & SATA connectors then yes you can use them in tandem.

397277 2005-10-18 03:21:00 So I would need a Serial ATA H/Drive to go with a new moboard that states that it has Sata? ned888 (9091)

Yup, you'll have to buy a SATA hdd, if you want to use a SATA hdd .

If you dont have a SATA hdd already .

But you can still use the 120gb u have now, if its IDE, as either a master or slave on the ide connections .

397279 2005-10-18 03:28:00 Many boards have both though, so check the specs carefully first bartsdadhomer (80)
