397045 2005-10-17 08:22:00 Hi there, maybe someone can help or direct me to other forums post re this - I've got a 40g hard drive partitioned into C 21.3g (properties figure) and D 14.1g. (is this a normal loss of space of about 1/8th or just "properties"being silly, or has Microsoft or IRD or someone helped themselves to the GST ?

D part has nothing on it and I presume I should really have my OS and software on the D - is that right?

How do I do this safely or should I get an expert to do it. I'd rate myself average in capability but a D- compared to most who post advice here. I presume just a click and drag on programmes ain't the way, and how does this affect settings etc...am I stirring up a hornets nest?

Cheers

397046 2005-10-17 08:35:00 D drive is just another place to keep stuff.

every one has there own way of doing things.

I keep the OS and all installed programs on C.
I put all my music and docs and downloaded crap on D.

as for the missing space?
the hard drive needs space for the index of all the files (a list of what is on the drive).

think of a 500 page book, 500 bits of paper, 2 blank at the start, 4 for the index, then the book you read then 3 blank at the end. so the infomation is only 491 pages.....

397047 2005-10-17 08:37:00 Depends what OS is installed and sometimes whether its formatted in FAT32 or NTFS.

BUT usually Windows does use a bit of the hdd for other things after u format a hdd. For overhead etc

Like out of 100 gb on this, XP only sees 92.2 gb of it.

397049 2005-10-17 08:41:00 Thanks guys, but can I just click and drag the Programs file to the D partition?

I thought keeping the OS and programmes (XP Home) was an advantage as it data seperate from OS and programmes was less likely to be corrupted?

draging the programs over the D will mean they stop working. very bad thing.

however when you install new programs you can choses to install to D and that will work OK.

397053 2005-10-17 09:07:00 Are you sure all the avaliable space has been allocated? I only realised that I had an extra 5 gigs unallocated a few days ago.

To check Control Panel>Admin Tools>Comp Management>Disk Management.

397054 2005-10-17 09:20:00 Yeah, well, it tells me there a third FAT32 volume called RECOVERY of 1.76 gb Ït also tells me "Healthy Unknown Partition"whatever that means?

Can anybody help?

If I drag all my data files over to the empty D partition, will this cause any problems?

Cheers
