397259 2005-10-20 01:01:00 Well, if the hardware manager says that it is working normally, what more is there to say? :D

But we know better. Like all managers in the real world, the Hardware Manager relies on his book of procedures for his underlings to follow. That way, it's not the manager's fault when things go wrong.

All the "working normally" means is that the OS has detected the controller in the CD drive, and it has responded normally. Biut there's no way to know that the rest of the drive has died.

About all you can do now is: find the CD drive in My Computer, right click on it, select "Properties", then the "Driver" tab. Click the "Uninstall" button, and shut down. Restart, and it should install the drive again. If it works, it's "just one of those things that Windows does". If it doesn't, it looks very much as if you need a new one. They aren't expensive ... you can get a CD-RW for $40 or so and a CD-RW + DVD reader for about the same. Here's some sample prices (www.pricespy.co.nz/cat_9.html#g21)

397260 2005-10-20 01:49:00 I uninstalled it and then shutdown my computer and turned it on. It Detected the driver. But i still have the same problem. Usually when i put my cd in it loads up and you can hear it spin loud and fast. Know when i put it in i hear nothing and only see insert the disk. Trema (9042)
397261 2005-10-20 01:54:00 It's probably dead. :badpc:

Check and see if you paid for an extended guarantee. ;) If not, you might have to replace it yourself.

397262 2005-10-20 09:09:00 When you replace the drive get yourself a small quantity of blue tack to hold the screws to your screwdriver, fishing screws out from a computer innards is not conducive to maintaining an even temper. FrankS (257)
