2015-01-22 01:52:00 | I have a few questions the sales team don't seem to be able to answer conclusively, so I thought I'd ask here. I already have UFB under a different provider and due to a comedy of errors from my current provider from day one I decided to move. MR offers internet tv as part of the package on UFB, however I have a Roku3 and tried making it work for Netflix, Hulu etc without success - yes I have tries UnblockUS and Unotelly also, no luck. The sales people at MR tell me it should work with them. I asked them if they have other customers using Roku3 working with thier system I was put through the support team. The guy there told me they have solved most of the problems for customers using Roku3 and it works with them by changing the DNS in the Roku itself. I am not sure this can be done and so was not assured the support person was being factual or just guessing. Are any of you here with MR using a Roku3 which working without the need for paid third party software? MR looks good on paper but I have read of fair share disappointed customers and I am a little wary now, hence the question here. I am not trying to offend the people at MR, it's not my intention, but I need facts before I go ahead and pay $200 early disconnection fees with current provider and lock myself in for $250 with MR and find out it is not going to work for me. Thanks in advance for all your help. Regards Roberto

So you are ignoring the bad feedback MR have and want someone to say, no forget all those comments, they're great? Me, I pay attention to user feedback. |

2015-01-22 02:44:00 | I'm with pctek on this one. The users are probably not complaining just for shits n giggles. I'm curious to hear though what most of the comments you've seen are about them? As for the Roku etc, you can force your DNS to be "intercepted" in some routers. I know that the likes of the Chromecast only use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 for their DNS, it's hard-coded in the Chromecast, but you can still intercept that on my Gargoyle router and redirect it to wherever you want (Such as UnblockUS).

2015-01-22 03:31:00 | Hi Chilling and pctek As in all things there are many good feedbacks and some not so good. Most of the negative ones were with the new connections taking longer than forecasted and a couple were left without broadband and phone line, this due to Spark canceling their subscription before UFB was ready with MR - a 50/50 fault there. What interested me was the responses MR, in the persona of Marc Whineray, provided, which were poor really. MR also do not provide an email service, which some took exception to and in all honesty MR should be more upfront with their info page. Speed-wise people are very happy, and what attracts me most is their plans for 1mbps plans to come soon. They have some in Singapore and, although they sort of stuffed the transition up there in some cases, the users there are very excited about the speeds and services. I don't believe a single ISP has all good feedback, however whilst some users have unrealistic expectations most of the above is very real and to be considered. Another thing of note is that MR do not charge extra for a UFB user to have a landline with them, something that all other ISP I have researched in NZ do. When I asked why no charge their answer was that they carry the calls over the fibre - now that is in contrast with what other ISP's have been telling me with the need to pay a rental to telecom etc...even though there is no copper requirements. So, 100/20 unlimited with them is 99 flat rate, that includes landline and internet tv.

2015-01-22 03:37:00 | Dont wish to sound nasty, and please don't take offense, BUT you have gotten two replies from a couple of very knowledgeable and experienced people both saying the same thing. Yet in reply to their comments it appears you actually have already made up your mind that you want to change anyway, and were hoping for a "yes go for it, they're great " type of response which unfortunately didn't happen. :2cents: MR also do not provide an email service, which some took exception to and in all honesty MR should be more upfront with their info page. Errrrrrrr yeah they do -- On the bottom of their page, under contact us: 6159

2015-01-22 03:50:00 | That was uncalled for Wainui, the people above gave their opinions and we are in a discussion forum I thought. As per the email service I meant one does not get an email address with them, like a _______@xtra.co.nz, or _________@orcon etc, they only provide broadband services. The people that took exception are not drongoes and you may want to get off you high perch.

2015-01-22 04:11:00 | Many, including myself, don't offer email services these days. Google can offer free email at a fraction of the cost with infinitely better service in terms of reliability, password reset options, security and whatnot, so it's basically 100% pointless offering it these days IMO. It was great back in the day as a "differentiator" feature, 1MB vs a 5MB mailbox... Same for free web space, ISP's used to offer that, but don't anymore. The phone lines through MR are just SIP lines, same as a large number of ISP's offer. I'd personally suggest 2talk if you wanted a SIP line. The "TV" side of things is a complete joke... It's basically just the "Global DNS" service that a number of other ISP's offer. My Republic don't actually give you access to the likes of Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, NetFlix etc... You've gotta pay for that yourself over and above. Again, not the most "up front" about it though, their website makes it out like "Oh yeah no worries sign up for us and get all you like in terms of TV from all these kick-ass places!!" Yeah you can get your TV from them, but they won't provide you with free access to them, only facilitate it through DNS-unblocking services similar to Unblock US. EDIT: There is a small disclaimer at the bottom of their FibreTV page that says "Note: some services like Netflix and Hulu Plus require a paid subscription"

2015-01-22 04:53:00 | Yes we are in a we are in a discussion forum, thats why I said don't take offense . The reply you gave and I've seen it countless times comes across as you have already made up your mind to a certain degree that the option may be OK for you . Its a bit like when people call up and say " I've gone and brought <insert what ever it is> Is it a good one or not? What is a person meant to say? If its good then not a problem, but what if its a total waste of Money ? cant really say its rubbish and shouldn't have brought it, since they have already paid for it . The best you can do is give a non answer like its working within its specifications . Question: If lets say a whole lot of people here say MR is Ok , good etc, you went and changed on their responses, and then found out its all lies and not so good, I guess you wouldn't be to happy ? Since my last reply, Chill has posted some good examples of "not so good services" Example: The "TV" side of things is a complete joke . . . It's basically just the "Global DNS" service that a number of other ISP's offer . My Republic don't actually give you access to the likes of Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, NetFlix etc . . . You've gotta pay for that yourself over and above . As mentioned before the "real" answer from a person who is well respected in their knowledge and experience . He or anyone else with a bit of honesty is not going to tell you something is Great if its not . As I said the reply as I read it you didn't quite get the response you "may" have been hoping for . At the end of the day, so far there's no real positive answers . Its your choice if you wish to change, but if you ask for opinions expect bad as well as good . I think you summed it up yourself in the original post: MR looks good on paper but I have read of fair share disappointed customers and I am a little wary now All negative so far - your own judgement may be spot on to start with . you may want to get off you high perch . Seriously ?? maybe its you not liking an honest answer .

2015-01-22 05:09:00 | Parents have MR on their property rented out . For us quick installation and fast speeds, no complaints . The TV feature, yes you still have to pay for the Netflix or whatever you wanna use . There is no free TV service . The landline is included . You simply plug it into one of the RJ45 ports . There is no telephone port like on our Fritzbox . You get a local number . They don't use the ublocking services . But at the end of the day for them it is $99/mo and that is a 100/20 connection . If you look around most ISPs tend to advertise greatly with their 30/10 connections being $95 Orcon or $80 Slingshot as the two cheaper options . Telecom / Vodafone are somewhate similar I think if you account the 12 month contract bonus credit that you get + the possible $10/mo discount if you have a On Account mobile plan . However if you want 100/20 connection Orcon becomes $110 if I recall correctly, Slingshot might be a bit more than that and Now ISP is a whopping ~$130/mo . They don't do VLAN Tagging . If you are in Auckland, maybe you can give Big Pipe a go? No contracts and the first month free . $79 for a 100/20 connection with options up to a 200/200 . Big Pipe said they can provide no VLAN Tagging if you ask their helpdesk . GrabOne is also having a special offer that is 2 months of any Internet plan for $29 . So you can trial them and see . . . you can request no VLAN Tagging and use your current cheap device . . .

2015-01-22 05:26:00 | Wainui, please read my first post again. My question was "Are any of you here with MR using a Roku3 which working without the need for paid third party software?" I never asked to be helped with making a decision to switch or not - just if anyone had experience with Roku and them. Now if anyone had a roku3 and was with them and got no joy, well then I would consider paying more and go with Slingshot or Orcon, for example. Only thing is they charge more and charge to have a landline. I have since asked the same on geekzone and whilst everyone had a good point for or against nobody made it personal like you did. Before you judge try to read properly first. It pays. @Chilling, I know one has to pay for the subscription to Hulu or/and Netflix, but other ISP's charge more to offer same entry to internet tv, like Nomad said. I tried getting netflix with by trialling Unotelly and UnblockUS but Roku3 has a geo-tagging and did not work. The email thing was mentioned because you asked what where the complaints about, was not me complaining. The landline is at no charge with MR, I would pay $99 with or without - other big providers, like vodafone charge $20 to $30 a month to just have the line added. @Nomad, yes I have considered big pipe but I live in the province and have no acces to them, however thank you for the first hand info about the provider.
