1392191 2015-01-15 06:19:00 A friend has a Toshiba Satellite X205 Core2 2.4GHz 2GB RAM 180Watt GeForce 8600M GT on a Hannstar J MV-4 motherboard.

He says the graphics card has died once before and been replaced professionally. He has asked me to try to fix his laptop, but i have only worked on desktop PCs before.

No worries, he says, you can try to repair it as its not worth paying a pro to do it. So I say okay, I could learn how to disassemble a laptop and maybe even fix it!

Is it worth fixing and can I find a replacement graphics card?

1392192 2015-01-15 06:32:00 Changing a graphic card on a Laptop is different to a desktop PC.

You would have to COMPLETELY disassemble the laptop to start with, and trust me its not like Desktop, theres wires, clips and various other components to disassemble.

Most laptop dont have cards like a Desktop does, they are chips soldered into the board, so the chip would need desoldering, a new one put in and resoldered, if you could even find one.

Some Laptops do have actual cards, but again they are different to Desktops, and trying to locate one for an old PC could be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

1392193 2015-01-15 07:03:00 Thanks Wainui, I thought this laptops age counted against fixing it.

Thanks too for the warning about the many wires, clips and screws. Irisvista has a good guide here (www.irisvista.com) with photos that I used to disassemble the laptop.

So at least I have learned something, even if it wasn’t really fixable.

Let’s hope I can put it back together again!

A search on Ebay did show similar cards but not this one
