1379918 2014-07-25 03:56:00 What is GST again? Goods and Services Tax. So...yea, it's about reducing taxes. And if, to make up the $3 billion a year shortfall, you increase taxes eslewhere - as you suggested - you're not actually saving people anything - so there's absolutely no point in it!

I'd advise making sure you're aware of what you're talking about, reducing GST is reducing taxes, simple as that. :)
Is it fair to tax a medical procedure?

Or going to the doctor.?

Well if you're going to look at it that way, is it 'fair' to tax income. After all, income is a necessity for most families ;)

And fair to who? Since the whole point of tax is to:
a) Fund public projects
b) Income redistribution

Then anyone could argue that taxes aren't fair, as some people contribute more than others, and some people benefit more than others.

A flat tax is the answer, no one escapes, having agreed that tax's are necessary.

Tax one to go the see doc is not right, so there.

You really don’t get it do you. :)

What they are actually saying is that the tax should be removed from essential items (like essential food) and transferred to non-essential items. (To balance the books) This gives the poor and low income sector the ability to buy food without subsidising “non-essential items and treats” for the wealthy.

Let’s face it, the Government would tax the air we breathe if they could work out how. Already some Local Governments (Councils) tax water into a property and tax it again as it leaves. Then they add GST so effectively tax a tax.

It’s a tough world we live in and I think whilst removing tax on food or some food is noble in principle, it isn’t a “Game Breaker” when it comes to the election. It’s really only a nicer rearrangement of the deck chairs. ;)

1379922 2014-07-25 05:03:00 This should be remembered........... New Zealand next needs to achieve current account surpluses (trading gains between exports and imports) so that the country as a whole can start to reduce its gross debt position (at $205 billion our debts are indeed ‘gross’!) No, you don't get it .

The policy proposed included cutting GST off items like fancy cheese - essential food items? No, most of that $3 billion cost won't help the poor, it'll go to the middle class and the wealthy . If it comes off fancy cheese, you can bet it'll come off stuff like fillet steak - as we all know, an essential cut of meat for the poor ;)

I'm not going to get into a debate about how they tax water, I don't see it'll contribute at all to the actual point - is GST off most food a good idea .

Again, I disagree, I don't think a flat tax is at all 'fair'.

Spot on Cic .

It never ceases to amaze me how many imported second hand cars are sitting on car lots around the country .

Why do we need so many? Ok, they aren’t solely responsible for the deficit but they don’t help either .
