1392104 2015-02-08 05:40:00 Any make and model will 'eventually' fall over, one day.

The bottom line here is, he's been using it for more than 6 months now and he is so-far-so-happy. :)

Should it fails him one day, just ring up Spark and they will send you one the next day or day after. It's FREE.

1392105 2015-02-08 05:44:00 Its free but its not intended to do anything more than "the basics". I have roughly 6x the devices your friend has on my network, and the Technicolor routers last a grand whopping total of 20 seconds, IF they can get DSL sync.

NetComm NF4V lasts a day or two.
InnBox V50-U lasts around an hour

My current setup has around 150 days uptime. Not an issue.

Trust me, your friend is lucky with that many devices they've not hit problems. I speak from _vast_ experience, not an isolated incident.

However, if they're not having issues, I agree, there's no point replacing it.

1392107 2015-02-08 08:11:00 Just had a chat with a friend of mine who has got VDSL from Spark with the same model of modem router .

He has got a PS3 consol (he plays consol games a lot), 3 phones, 2 desktop PCs (wired), an iPad and 2 notebooks (wireless) connected to it; he has been using it for more than half a year now without problem . I think this is an above average family user .

He has just bought a new 'smart' 54" (55"?) SONY 4K TV which also has a wireless connection for him to play with as a new toy .

He is quite happy with it - simply, it works for him as and when he needs it . That's the bottom (and final) line . Who can convince him to spend around $200 to up-grade (?) his modern?

This is exactly why Spark give out those routers, for 90% of users, they are absolutely fine . For the 10% they don't suite, they can buy their own solution . Or if you just wanted something with AC, talk them into giving you/discounting an HG659b instead .

1392108 2015-02-08 08:21:00 What I find most amusing was this started off as "Recommend me something, Reliability is of prime concern" and ended with "Actually I know better than you. You're wrong, that router is actually really good and doesn't fall over and die".

:-/

1392109 2015-02-08 08:23:00 And for his use case, it may well not fall over. Alex B (15479)
1392110 2015-02-08 10:18:00 Come on guys, cool down a little .

There were two options for me:

1 . Pay ~$200 as suggested for a 'reliable' unit tested by some of you .
2 . Get a FREE (no strings attached) unit that works for me which also confirms and works for my friend who has been using it (same model) for >6 months .

I asked for help here initially because I never expected (at that time) Spark to give one to me absolutely FREE .

It's not my intention (not at all) to challenge anyone here that the Free unit is better than others . If it's for not FREE, I wouldn't have got from Spark, for sure .

I never meant to offend (or to challenge) anyone here but if I did, it's not intentional and please accept my sincere apologies .

Most of you folks in this forum are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable individuals who have assisted me in one way or another and many others who need help, in the past years .

1392111 2015-02-08 20:41:00 Ah yeah pretty much every ISP gives one out these days, they kinda have to coz people simply aren't prepared to find one themselves, especially given Chorus require VLAN 10 on the WAN for VDSL2 (And some UFB connections if determined by your ISP) so yeah...

Given the majority of people have no idea what a VLAN is, it's safer for them to just give / rent / lease / loan you one :D

Tell them all your devices need to be on 5ghz due to interfearence issues
