1392475 2015-01-22 00:58:00 What might happen, is after the 1 year free ug period is over.... your free win10 is trashed/HD died & you need to re-install....then you MIGHT have to pay (as you dont have a install CD or usable Win10 install key)
Didnt that happen with the $20ish ug they did some time back ???

Didnt that happen with the $20ish ug they did some time back ??? The average user wouldn't do this, BUT before it dies, make a backup Image of the Drive, then simply drop that image back to a new Drive.

or if you wanted a Actual Install DVD for a fresh Install, its a piece of cake to make one from the download from doing the upgrade.:nerd:

The key you would get in an email ( sometimes), or run one of the many key finders available, again Before it died.

1392477 2015-01-22 03:20:00 That would still be too much as it would mean that they were the only software company still charging user licensing fees for a desktop operating system.

Wrong ;)

In fact, I think you'd be more accurate to say Apple was the only company not charging user licensing fees.

But ever heard of RedHat? It ain't free mate ;)

Yes, I know RedHat is Open Source, but that's repackaged as CentOS. Redhat, the product, isn't free as it comes with support.

1392478 2015-01-22 03:45:00 Wow so much Microsoft negativity on this thread. I get it everything Apple & Google does is amazing and revolutionary, anything Microsoft is to be hated. nmercer (3899)
1392479 2015-01-22 06:13:00 W10, the HoloLens and the Surface Hub, tbh it's the first time in a long time Microsoft has impressed me with innovation. Alex B (15479)
1392480 2015-01-22 06:18:00 I'll upgrade for that price.
My old Vista machine will become a linux one once Vista support ends.

But the three Win7 and the 8.1 for sure.

Cheers Microsoft.

They are not hated on this website. It's just that since the the arrival of mobile computing Microsoft has discovered how hard it is to compete on a level playing field. It is a whole different ball game designing products that have consumer appeal as opposed to enterprise IT dept appeal. As a result, MS is getting hammered.
