By the look everyone who upgrades within the year there will be no cost for life

After 1 Year there will be a cost ,that's still to come As posted earlier, thats not what the other article / link in the original post says thenextweb.com
Microsoft said that the free upgrade will be valid for the first year immediately after the release; if you upgrade during that time, you’ll get Windows 10 for free, for the “lifetime” of your device. key words in Bold. Lifetime of your device.

1392466 2015-01-21 22:14:00 Not according to one of the links in the original Article. Its Free for the lifetime of the device.

Which really is what the older OEM terms were, its tied to the same device.

Hi W T,
I have w 7 Pro which plays apps that I used in W98 SE and so on using the compatibility program.
Will W 10 be able to still use and do that?

Effie c Cant honestly answer that .

Windows 10 Preview has compatibility mode like earlier versions did . It may be a case of try and see . Some programs do work fine others don't .

Would this W 10 upgrade be able to use a W 98 se program game, that I use in my W 7 Pro using it's retroactive ability in

1392469 2015-01-21 23:34:00 How this PC is going I should be using Windows 7 until 2019. I believe Adobe had sone something similar with the lease program, can you still purchase software outright? Nomad (952)

Catch a few who think Free is good,Year 2 we want money

no its not like Office 365.

We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch.

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge.

if it works on Windows 7, there is a very good chance it runs on Windows 10

Not as I read it. The upgrade is free if you do it within the first 12 months of release then if you upgrade after that it's full price where as Office 365 is a software rental from day one..

Thats right, you have 1 year to upgrade, after that you would be paying some $$ .

Even NOW, still get people asking are microsoft offering the discounted upgrade to Windows 8 (about $20 odd from memory) -------- Errrrrrrrrrr no, and they appear quite shocked they aren't .

Office is similar -- You have two versions,

Office 2013 - you pay for it once - that's it, no other charges .
Office 365 is subscription based you pay every year . The beauty of the Subscription Home is its actually the pro version that can go on five computers . Office 365 also has other features ( online guff) & as long as your subscription is up to date, any upgrades to a newer version are all included . Where as with Office 2013, its as it comes, ( patches and service packs excluded)

Even if Windows did go subscription -- Someone mentioned $9 . 99 a month, take that over a Year and its still less than buying outright like you do now .
