2014-07-16 22:21:00 | Seems I am not alone in not knowing Netflix. I expect Richard the know all knows. Why Slingshot are offering it, I know not. This is what I received............... Want Netflix and other great video content? Hi there, Over here at Slingshot we think it’s about time that Kiwis get to enjoy the same great online content as the good people of the US of A and Europe. So we’ve turned on what we call Global Mode for all of our customers. Global Mode is a free service that lets you browse websites that are normally blocked for New Zealand residents. Sites like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and BBC iPlayer, plus dozens of others. What does this mean? This means that if you browse to Netflix.com, hulu.com or a number of other great content sites, you will be able to sign up and access their content instead of seeing the usual “Not allowed in your location” message. How does this work? To cut a long story short we have some fancy technology that tricks these websites into thinking you are from the US or Europe. You don’t need to do anything special at all. It will only do this for particular sites. All other web browsing you do will be as normal, so our local great content providers like TVNZ ON Demand will still work as they do now. Why are we doing this? We think there is no good reason that these websites shouldn’t let you watch their shows on the same terms as people in other countries. There is no reason why it should cost more, or in many cases not be made available to you at all. All blocking access does is encourage people to pirate content, which in turn hurts the artists involved in making all the great content we enjoy. What do you need to do? Nothing. If you want to start exploring great content that was previously blocked to Kiwis, you can start straight away. Please note: In some cases you may need to reboot your modem in order for Global Mode to kick in. For instructions on how to watch things like Netflix on your Apple TV, go to help.slingshot.co.nz, or have a chat to us on Facebook or Twitter. We hope you enjoy your new found Internet freedom! Happy streaming from the Team @ Slingshot.

2014-07-16 23:03:00 | I suspect the movie distributors in NZ wish to continue with their traditional practices. If you had a goose dropping golden eggs, would you want your neighbour offering all comers laughably cheap gold eggs? The exact same eggs! The distributors want their feudal rights to delay films (so they can get them cheaper,) and charge a kings ransom for everything they allow into circulation. They make a great deal of money for essentially doing nothing, any hint of competition to their monopoly would mean the smoke would blow away, the mirrors would crack and the Emperor's tailor would have to find a different sort of cloth. | R2x1 (4628) | |
2014-07-16 23:39:00 | Theres one little detail Slingshot "forgot" to put in the letter, and its a important one -- You still have to pay for it, you have to have a US Address and cant pay with a NZ credit card. Notice the wording, done on purpose lets you browse websites that are normally blocked for New Zealand residents. Sites like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and BBC iPlayer, plus dozens of others. ----- This means that if you browse to Netflix.com, hulu.com or a number of other great content sites, you will be able to sign up browse is NOT watch full programs. Theres ways around that though, as described on Orcon Site ( scroll down step 1 & 2) www.orcon.net.nz There IS an upside to it as well  Once its easier to get here in NZ instead of jumping through hoops, faking certain things like Address etc, more people will sign up. Expect it to be less content than the US version to start with, but it will give Sky etc a kick in the pants, and hopefully they will have more competition, and put on some decent programs instead of repeating the same crap week after week. :)

2014-07-17 02:01:00 | The Terms that people in NZ are bypassing are these , Item 6 c Currently not licensed to be shown in NZ. If it wasn't allowed then Slingshot wouldn't be doing what they are doing. I'm sure their lawyers would have looked into it before they started their Global Mode feature.

To sign up for Netflix, you dont need a US address and a US credit card. I have Netflix and Hulu at home, and I pay for for both using my NZ credit Card. When signing up all they asked for was a US zipcode and I just googled a random zipcode and used it. |
