398301 2005-10-22 00:55:00 I have just completed a nitemare upgrade and install for a freind of mine, he asked me to install a new motherboard and drop in an old Athlon 1.1 ghz thunderbird chip which I donated to him. The Motherboard is a socket A Elite Group KM400-M2 with the VT 8235 Southbridge chipset.

I Installed the Motherboard, keeping it simple with the onboard Vga port, I then proceeded to install Windows 98, the P.C rebooted prematurely throughout the install process perhaps about thirty times, I kept going because each time it got a little further into the setup process and eventually came out the otherside with a reasonably firm 98 installation.

I then used the Windows Xp upgrade disk, setup initialised okay, then rebooted and got to the point of examining hardware devices and froze. When I rebooted the Machine it would get to the exact point and freeze again. I went to the net and learned about the Hardware Abstraction Layer ( HAL) went back to the P.C. and pressed the F7 key when prompted to press F6 for SCSI or third party raid devices on the boot up screen. this successfuly forced Win XP to complete the installation and then I installed an Agp power colour video card and other bits and pieces. My mate was happy, he went off and used is P.C. for a while, and all was fine.

Then he wanted to play Americas Army, so he purchased an Athlon XP 2500+ chip and installed it himself. well, Windows started to boot up its splash screen then froze, he tried it a few more times without success then for some reason he turned the Pc. on and off quickly during start up. Now the machine starts, the dvd spins a little, and the hard drive does a couple of spins, but nothing displays on the monitor, no Bios info or anything, a different monitor gave the message not recieving a video signal. I have checked jumper settings, swapped back the old athlon tbird chip, and cleared the cmos, the only other thread I can think of is that he had left an America"s Army Cd in the dvd drive, which I had done once with my P.C.with the same CD, and my machine stalled on boot up but I got it up and running ok and did a virus check which came up clean. As we no longer have the reciept for the board should I just toss it , or is thier anything anyone can suggest?

cheers

Mike

I think this is a triumph of hope over reality . Did you expect it to work reliably?

You friend then installed a faster CPU, (probably pulling more current) and when it failed  . . . he tried it a few more times without success then for some reason he turned the Pc . on and off quickly during start up .

Rapidly turning the power off and on is a Very Bad Idea . :groan: I suspect the power supply was underpowered to start with . It's probably a very sad supply now .

398303 2005-10-22 01:16:00 oops forgot to mention, as part of his upgrade I threw in a new 400 watt power supply, but yes, I grimaced when he mentioned that. 1-longboarder (9116)
398304 2005-10-22 01:26:00 Did you try a PCI or AGP video card (ideally a cheap but working one)?

Have a look for bulging capacitors on the motherboard and as Graham L implies you want to try it with a different working power supply.

Reseat the CPU and ram too.

398305 2005-10-22 01:27:00 The memory would be a prime suspect, from the installation problems. An OS installation should not be like that. Graham L (2)

No sign of burnt cooking, swapped over power supply into my own machine and fires up ok, have reset Ram and swapped over to the old working CPU, have not tried another card yet, but back to onboard Graphics all with no luck (I have a power colour Agp card)

398309 2005-10-22 02:06:00 now, i could be wrong am only goin from memory but it might be that particular board which has a jumper for duron type chips or athlon/semperon.... chck the book out or if it dont tell ya go online and find the manual I have avague feelign that when I had that particular issue it was with that board drcspy (146)
398310 2005-10-22 02:30:00 remove and reinsert the battery for the bios. Sometimes (and I aint sure why) this fixes it. Just copy the settings over in case. bob_doe_nz (92)
