398476 2005-10-23 01:56:00 I have just spent half the day re-installing XP, i now have most things re-install how I like them.

the only missing thing is video CODECs.

I want divx and such like, i know that you can get "codec packs" that have like 20 or more codecs in one easy download.

question is where can in find a pack that has most of the common codecs and no spyware and other crap.

398478 2005-10-23 03:04:00 In the last 3 or 4 years ive only ever used one codec pack. FFDS which you cant get for free from

www.free-codecs.com

Most codec packs are overloaded with codecs which you dont really need and are more trouble than help.

Always includes the latest xvid and divx codecs.

398481 2005-10-23 04:26:00 i HIGHLY recommend useing NO codec packs. most are full of crap that you will never need and are well known for causeing problems.

simply get what codecs you need.

DONT go with a codec pack... I usually install XviD (because its only just over 1MB free download) and then use VLC for everything regardless. VLC will play anything you throw at it, so there's no need for wild packs that can destabalize your OS

398483 2005-10-23 05:38:00 thanks all , have install xvid and VLC. robsonde (120)
398484 2005-10-23 20:22:00 Don't use ANY codec packs, they often contain out of date codes and/or spyware/trojans in the worse cases. They generally "glug" up your system.

Use FFDshow as someone posted above, Vosub and PowerDVD for DVD's. These will play everything and keep your system glug free.

Some say you can get away with just using Xvid but I have found in the past it won't play maybe 1/10 movies ripped movies, not saying you do that :)

398485 2005-10-23 21:29:00 I used to just have divx & xvid installed, but the I got a hold of some ogm & mkv videos & the individual codecs I downloaded didn't work to well. I ended up downloading the kLite codec pack & everything works like a charm now (just make sure you don't select uninstall divx or xvid & deselect install media player classic - that player sucks.)

I was using VLC because that was the only thing that could play the videos, but I like WMP better.
