398569 2005-10-23 08:23:00 I am planning on re installing Windows XP

Got a 4GB and 6GB hd. I want to install the OS and apps i.e MS Office on the 4GB disk and data to go on 6GB.

How do you specify XP to save profiles i.e documents and settings to go on a different hard drive then be on the OS partition.

Also will this setup slow performance for disk read write or improve or make no difference at all.

I have a slow system with Cel 333Mhz cpu and normal primary/secondary IDE setup so just bit concerned on this.

basically i just want to make the setup so that i can just wipe and reinstall OS without touching the user data. Any other tips will be appreciated

Cheers

398570 2005-10-23 08:28:00 I would get bigger hdd's 20gb+ first .

4gb or 6gb wont last long with XP . As its 1 . 5 GB by itself .

Not including updates . And if you install Office, and its updates, you wont have any space left .

How much memory is on the system??

398571 2005-10-23 10:11:00 Thanks Speedy,

I need to make do with this as i cant get any bigger hard drives.

Currently i have Win XP with MS XP on these hard drives so space is not really a problem. I'll use the 6 GB for OS. I just really need to know how to go about setting
up profile on different partition. Can someone let me know on this.

Cheers

398573 2005-10-23 11:01:00 thankx prescott- thats how its currently setup. XP runs fine on Celeron 333 though its without SP2 and all glitter is turned off.

Anybody knows how to implement profiles on another partition....thats what i am wanting to know.

Cheers

398575 2005-10-23 19:14:00 You can put your O/S on the 4Gb . I've done it on a 2Gb . And then added SP2 . Wouldn't recommend 2Gb though - it was a hassle . But 4 is OK .
As for your other question:

Log on to the computer as an administrator .

Create a new folder .

Open the current "Documents and Settings" folder .

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab .

Under Advanced settings click Show hidden files and folders, and then
click to clear the Hide file extensions for known file types and Hide
protected operating system files check boxes .

Click OK .

Click and drag to copy all the folders to the new folder, except for
the currently logged on users folder .

In Control Panel, double-click System, and then click the User
Profiles tab .

Copy the current user's profile to the new folder .

Click OK, close Control Panel, and then log off and log on to the
computer as an administrator again .

In Registry Editor, click Find on the Edit menu .

Type documents and settings, and then click Find .

Replace the value data or rename the value or registry key to the new
path for each and every registry key and value that contains the
original path . NOTE: You must complete this change for every instance
in the registry or your computer may not start .

It is imperative that you update all registry keys and values with the
new path .

Restart the computer .

398576 2005-10-23 22:42:00 Thanks PC Tek,

Great Info,

I had a look at MS KBASE and the steps you have mentioned work fine
for existing installation:
support.microsoft.com

I am planning on doing new install and MS Kbase says
to make entry in the unattend.txt file so it specifys
the location of the "Docu and Settings" folder.

And to run "Winnt32.exe /unattend"
I am not sure how to go about installing in this manner.

For normal install we just put the CD and go thru the wizard etc
I am guessing that for the above method i will need to boot into DOS mode
Get a file created and store it somewhere.

I dont want the whole process to be unattended,
just get up to the part where it specifys the location path and then
goes into normal prompt mode.

Can someone advise on this
