398704 2005-10-24 06:11:00 Sure you can. No question is too stupid. But there are some reasonable expectations like "have a look for yourself first', coupled with "Google is your friend". etc,.

And explain yourself clearly and give the necessary (informative) details of your OS, system etc.

I haven't solved my latest prob here and it's a bummer. Particularly as it was trying to help out friends. That's cool. I'm not hungry.
I'm also not thirsty and the ground isn't shaking under my feet, Life's good. :D

398705 2005-10-24 06:18:00 I use the same Xtra dial-up connection from various PCs at various locations all around the country.

All you need is the correct POP3 and SMTP settings, dial-up number and login/password to be correct.

398706 2005-10-24 06:22:00 Thanks Elephant, no I'm sure there were no other of them stroppy and disobedient employee type objects involved. (Hmm well didn't check that out but doubt it).

It's a trade business like many - a tradesperson and the partner (wife in this case), in the office. No other full-time workers.

Pisses me off. Like I have said above I have done this before with success. Might just have to wait until I go over there ( Bay of Islands) again and have another go.

Thanks anyway and any other person who has exp of this biz of using the same ISP account from different (un-networked comps), your observations are most welkom................................m

398707 2005-10-24 06:30:00 Elephant , good call on the other employee using it. Very possible, well worth investigating. .... but reading on NO so "edit" Battleneter (60)
398708 2005-10-24 06:42:00 Gee shoot godfather maybe you've done it agian. I've done this before wth ISPs other than Xtra and the POP3/SMTP issue has not come up.

TRUE.

I had thought that would be to do with Outlook Express which none of us are interested in using.

The dial-up number, username and password we have checked over and over.
Bit diificult to resolve because i have since come home but all this info is good.

Thanks for all the help.

398709 2005-10-24 07:07:00 And with Xtra, even if someone was "using the connection" it just defaults to the casual connection rate ($2.50/hr) for the second connection

"If more than one user logs on at the same time using the same user ID you will incur additional charges at a rate of $2.50 per hour. We will charge additional hourly rates for the entire time that more than one user is connected. We will also charge at that rate for any subsequent users logging on with that username or login ID. "

So completely abandon the thought that someone else is using it as that would not affect the ability to use it, just the cost.

As a side issue, some ISPs class it as on offence with huge penalties to have multiple access at once, but Xtra allow it on reasonable terms. SOme families use that to good effect with partners/children at other locations.

398710 2005-10-24 07:29:00 Excellent godfather, thanks. I understand the issue more clearly. I had thought it was someting like that but didn't know that Xtra was so magnanimous(!).

(Yes. I did know that some ISPs consider it a huge offense that's why I found it a bit difficult to ask about in the first place.)

Still annoyed I didn't get it going over there in the BOI, but hey cool as cucumbers.

Any other experiences/tips from posters most welcome...........................mh

398711 2005-10-24 07:45:00 Have you got a dialup connection of your own you can try to confirm it is not a problem with the computer.
That error message sounds a bit strange.
What actually happens when you try to connect.
Can you hear the modem dialing and can you hear the modem handshaking noises.
Do you get an error number as well as the message and at what stage do you get that message.

Yeah I got home and tried it on my old dialup comp (made a new connection, thier settings, username and password, ISP (Xtra) Xtra's phone number etc) and it wouldn't connect either.
Gave a 676 error message, from Xtra so I looked it up (again) same message we got in the BOI and said was already in use. "This connection is already in use" tho damn sure the comp in the workshop was tuned off. (Used it myself this morning and then turned it off tho not at the wall, really don't think that is the issue)
I can hear the modem diallng, wurdle-wurdle and it all looks promising but then at the end it comes up with that aforementioned error "already in use".

I kind of thnk it might be something to do with the network settings on the second (laptop) comp. I should remove everything I can find about networking on it and then try again , when I go visit again.
Thanks for the responses.
The 'new' computer, the lappy, has prevously been only used in Germany and all sorts of connectioins in German I removed and then tried to connect to a nz ISP. Might be something to with that. Never run across that before.

398713 2005-10-24 08:32:00 Error 676 simply means the number is busy. Dial the number you have entered using a telephone and listen?

For Xtra should be 087303030

Remember it DOESNT MATTER if the workshop computer is in use and connected.
