398694 2005-10-24 03:34:00 I've been at some friends' place for the wknd and tried setting up their connection so they could use the same ISP they use at work (their own business) at home, so they could still do some stuff at home especially on long wknds like this w/out having to go down to the workshop to see what's up. (Or have a seperate connection for home and workshop). They get a lot of business thru email.

So it's not really ICS because it's a different phone number they're connecting from and the two comps are not networked. I've done this before by simply setting up a new connection from the new comp at the different location and entering the same ISP connection details.

But I couldn't get it to work, kept saying there was already a connection established. (It's a lappy left behind by visiting rellies from Germany, got a bit of a wierd keyboard layout but that's not the issue).

One issue I thought might be that comp at the house (the lappy) has previously been on a network and maybe this is causing a conflict. They don't have the disks for a reformat so we have to use what's on it. It's win2000 and the one in the workshop has XP home SP2.

Anyone experienced with this kind of "internet sharing" and has got some tips even similar problems much appreciatted.

(Their former friendly comp enthusiast/helper fell in love and has dissappeared to cloud nine or somewhere similar, anyway, out of touch, so I'm trying to help. TIA....................m

398695 2005-10-24 03:42:00 Not too sure what you are asking but,

If you are talking about broadband there 2nd location will need to have the line DSL enables as well (assuming DSL), and there are issues with 2 connected at the same time

If you are talking dial up, then there should not be an issue as long as the business is not connected at the same time.

Or are you talking about Remote Desktop, ..... connecting to the actual business machine?.

398696 2005-10-24 03:44:00 re-reading it, are you talking about just retrieving there mail? Battleneter (60)
398697 2005-10-24 04:04:00 Thanks for that.............

dial up

Email, yes, but other stuff as well ie, the web.

Yes they fully understand they can't use the one connection at both places at the same time.

Cheers.

(any other tips welcome)

(uh, it wouldn't be an issue with Xtra do you think? Never tried a "double-connection" like this with Xtra. I've had a good look around on Xtra's site but can't find any mention of this.)

But doesn't this happen all the time? People have an ISP at home with their PC, they go away for work or holiday and take a lappy and continue with their ISP account from home without any changes?) (Apart from the line charges at a hotel or motel or motorcamp or whatever?).

cheers ............m:)

398698 2005-10-24 04:18:00 Well Dial up is straight forward. The accounts are not assigned to phone numbers or anything (well I have never heard of it).

I would guess its one of 2 things.

1. You have entered the wrong settings somewhere. The error message you are getting is not accurate, ie wrong phone number and it reporting a rubbish error for lack of a handshake etc.

2. The business machine is auto dialing maybe when it checks for email every 30 mins or something, so it is connected without you realising it.

I have never done this either with an xtra dial up, however can see no reason why it won't work. May pay to give them a quick call to make sure it is possible, maybe there is some sort of new system.

398699 2005-10-24 04:28:00 Hmmmmm, thanks for that.

No, the business machine is switched off so no chance of auto dial-up interfering.

We tried the settings about ten times, checking each letter.
"b".
"did you day "b", as in 'board?".
Yes. "b", as in board."
""sure it's not "p" as in 'proxy'?
"no it's....

...and on and on.

Damn. I'm not there anymore (at the friend's place) so can't have another go.

Well I see no reason why it will not work. I was on Dialup using Xtra for years. Used to pickup my whole computer and take in down to Wellington for a couple of weeks using the same dialup number (0800 303030) as I did at home. I didn't have to reconfigure anything even though I was dialing using my Mothers' phone line which was 04-567-xxxx and ours was 07-886-xxxx. There seems to be no check on the number you are dialling from in my experience.

Are you absolutely sure that the business one was turned off? The other possibility is that one of these peoples' employees has access to the account and password and quietly uses their account on the weekends maybe???

I am not saying that someone is but who knows!!??
