398676 2005-10-24 01:01:00 I have a Samsung CD-R/RW SH-R522C installed in a AMD K6 500Mhz pc with 376MB of Ram

The first time i tried to burn a cd it worked perfectly but now (even with different media) it gives me a power calibration error.

There is an info page here (www.qmb.co.nz)

What could be causing this? and more importantly how do i get the cd writer working again?

398677 2005-10-24 01:13:00 DVD and CD writable disks have Media ID code information written on them, within this Media ID code there is information that the drive uses to calibrate itself to the disk .

When the drive starts to write to a disk it burns a small amount of data to a calibration area on the disc referencing the calibration information in the Media ID code and then tries to read back the data written .

If it cannot read it there will be a failure with a "power calibration error" .

A power calibration error is therfore *normally* caused by problems with the media type being unsuited to the burner, but ban also be a failed/failing drive laser .

398678 2005-10-24 01:20:00 The burner is brand new but what im thinking is that it is rather too cheap and might not be good quality (i didnt buy it)
Ive tried 3 different brands of media all with the same problem

398680 2005-10-24 02:06:00 Well, I would either take it back since its still under warranty . If you know where the receipt is, and replace it with a better burner .

(DVD burner since it'll let u burn dvds and cd's) .

If you do decide to get another cd burner, I dont know if its just the shop down from me, but the ASUS 52x32x52 burners freeze certain programs .

ie: Nerovision/Nero/Nero Infotool . Just dont get this burner .

And this model, also makes your system unstable . I took mine back (the 52x32x52), and replaced it with a ASUS DVD burner .

398681 2005-10-24 02:25:00 I must have sold/fitted at least 50 of those Asus cd-writers and never once seen or had frezzing reported back to me.... Metla (12)
398682 2005-10-24 02:47:00 Must be the shop down the road then. With a batch of bad 52x32x52 ax burners.

I updated the firmware for it, it made no diff, so flashed it back to the original and took it back to replace it.
