2005-10-27 02:40:00 | been a few months after i first installed gentoo onto my system now.. i thought might just do some updates used emerge -pv on few of the packages i've installed and notice how they're all outdated now is it a good idea to run emerge --update world and just update everything or even emerge --update --deep world i'm not sure if i should do this..due to the..um..don't fix what isn't broken rule.. just want to get some bugfix/security updates that's all

2005-10-27 19:19:00 | had a look at glsa and will try it later and tried emerge -uDpv without sync because i just synced my portage last night and.. it's supose to be emerge -uDpv world right? did that and notice i got like 368mb worth of soruce to download and compile now.. doing all this would it break the system easily or can it easily get stuck halfway? oh and was just wondering if i should update the compilers first before running this

2005-10-27 20:41:00 | I recently (in the last 3 days) ran emerge -uD world. Didn't update compilers or anything before I ran it, just did it. Once I had recompiled new kernel, and reemerged some things it all went well. Just a note of interest, if you are using nvidia driver (not nv but nvidia) the latest stable is broken. Post back if emerge -uD world wants to include it .. (I think it is version 6679-r6 or similar that is broken, there is a version 7676 that is not yet classed as stable but I am using it no worries on P4 and I know others on AMD64 using it no worries)

2005-10-27 22:23:00 | no nvidia driver so that's okay k..good to hear nothing goes wrong i was thinking about it because i tried to update some programs manually and the compliation seem to fail and so i thought maybe too many things in the system is outdated just out of interest.. how much source did you need to download and compile? and how long did that take?

2005-10-28 02:00:00 | Approx 100MB, took most of the day. If I were you, I would do it say Friday night, and recompile etc on Saturday.
