400337 2005-10-30 04:53:00 There was no disk in the box!

Is this (www.pccables.com) bad news?

I don't know. The DSE site talks about a Windows XP certified RM-203 driver.

The pccables site says the driver included with the device is for Windows 98 only, and is not required for either Win 2000 or Win XP, and Jacks reference is also only for win95/98

400338 2005-10-30 04:57:00 Drivers are included with XP, and the old driver pack for your era stick is not XP compatible.

Simply select Sidewinder (auto-detect) from the list of controllers in your control panel.

I think there may be confusion between drivers for the USB game port device, and drivers for the Sidewinder.

The DSE site indicates that an XP driver is included for the game port adapter.

400339 2005-10-30 05:02:00 I'm not confused in the slightest, His comp detected the device as a joystick so the port is working, He simply has to assign in correctly in the game controller applet within his control panel. Metla (12)
400340 2005-10-30 05:26:00 When I try to add new controller and go down to "microsoft sidewinder(auto detect)" it comes up with the following error " your gameport or game port controllers are not properly configured. Please consult your device manager".

400341 2005-10-30 05:50:00 Biff it and buy an actual gameport, The manufacturer of your mobo most probally make one, If its a reasonable brand. Otherwise a cheap sound card will sort it.

Though I supose it cant hurt to track down whatever drivers the others were discussing, In my limited experience bugger all (maybe none but I will refrain from stating an absolute) gear works on an adaptor unless it was designed to, and Im pretty sure the only MS game controllers need a specific (right down to the model) MS supplied adaptor, and even then that only works on the last couple of models.....

400342 2005-10-30 07:58:00 The pdf manual for this adapter on the DSE site says that XP and 2k operating systems have device drivers incorporated, so that the adapter will be detected and installed automatically.

The mention of an XP driver in the product description is misleading and wrong. I think what they meant to say was an XP certified RM-203 chipset, not driver.

400343 2005-10-30 08:01:00 So why cant I fly the friendly skys? miknz (3731)
400344 2005-10-30 08:21:00 The manual says that if you have problems, unplug the adapter and change the mode switch, then re-plug the adapter... or something like that. Have you tried playing with the mode switch?

Maybe do as Metla suggests and get a game port.

DSE are pretty good at taking back products that dont work or give problems.

400345 2005-10-30 08:34:00 So why cant I fly the friendly skys?

I have one of those adapters which I bought from DSE. I could not get my MS Pro Joystick to work with my Soundblaster Audigy game port. It was detected but would not fly the sky. I gave the joystick away to a person running Win98SE.

I then went and bought a USB Logitec Wingman Extreme with forcefeedback. It works now. About $120 from DSE then. This was a while ago.

If anyone wants a free adapter they can pick it up for no charge.

I run WinXP Pro SP2.

You don't have to have force feedback but it's great!

400346 2005-10-30 09:43:00 I have exactly the same adapter here at home. There is no disc that comes with it, and XP automatically picked up the Logitech Wingman Extreme joystick I have (non usb). Incidentally, it was also picked up on Linux and worked.

I would suggest as the online manual says, unplug it, and try it on each different mode, then plug it back in. Mine was set on mode 1, maybe yours is different and needs to be set on either 2,3, or 4.
