| 400198 | 2005-10-29 02:51:00 | I have upgraded computers and the new one has a SATA hard drive installed. I am wanting to add to my new computer the hard drive from my old computer (which is the ATA sort) so that I can copy all the files and photos I have across onto the new hard drive. Is it possible to do this? I would imagine the first thing one would need to so is change the jumpers on the old hard drive to slave so that the computer does not boot up from it. However, given the old har drive has drive portions labeled C and D on it will it cause a conflict of some sort given the new hard drive with the OS on it has a C drive? Thanks for any replies |

Just as long as the old hdd isnt configured in the BIOS to boot from it, it wont load / boot windows . Just put the old hdd on the primary or secondary IDE master/slave . Then configure the old hdd in the BIOS to master or slave IDE (Put it on AUTO) . Then boot from the SATA hdd, and once windows has booted . You can copy files (that you've downloaded and photos) to the new hdd . NOT programs that were previously installed on the old hdd . They'll have to be reinstalled on the new hdd . Then the old hdd can be formatted . SATA hdd's dont have master and slave . Only master . And totally diff from IDE . |
