400811 2005-11-01 05:21:00 Hi,
Just about to build a new pc. Is xp media edition the same as xp home, but with a few extras?, or is xp home better in some way?. I'll be getting an athlon 4400x2 cpu and 7800gtx vid card for it, so don't want media edition if it is just a gimic that won't run as well as regular xp. Thanks in advance...

You might as well use XP and get a tuner, which comes with remote.

It looks similar to Nero 7's Nero Home.

400813 2005-11-01 05:53:00 I didn't think you could buy Windows Media Centre unless it comes preinstalled?

If you are wanting a system that doubles as your TV recorder, music player, radio station which is very much intergrated and a point & click system, then the Media Centre will probably suit you.

The OS still functions similar to WinXP Home Edition underneath the extra media software.

XP Media centre is based on XP Pro. If you don't join it to a domain at build time you can't do it later. This is done as XP OEM is cheaper than pro, and MS have done this for product differentiation. Additionally you can't use fast user switching on a domain, and media center depends on this to allow extenders like the xbox to connect.

Unless you have a major drive to build a Media center then don't do it, there is a reason that it is only supposed to be used by system builders. It's very fickle about hardware compatability. An example is that you don't want to have to wait for the computer to boot to watch telly, therefore it must be able to S3 suspend and resume for weeks on end without a reboot.

You can by the OEM version retail with a pice of Original Equipment like a IDE ribbon cable or the remote and receiver. This is bending the rules a bit with regards to MS' rules about OEM versions.

Ah, I thought it was based on the Home Edition from Microsoft's comments "While you can access network resources on a work network or a domain, you cannot join a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 PC to the domain. PCs running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 are designed specifically for home use. Windows XP Professional features, specifically Domain Join and Cached Credentials (Credentials Manager for logons) are not included."

Learn something everyday. :) I was trying to work out the differences between standard XP and XP Media Centre last week when I was helping a friend choose a new computer.
