| 400650 | 2005-10-31 09:02:00 | Hi Everyone, heres the deal...I've got 20 million things wrong with this comp, its only a couple of years old (2 at the most). Up until 3 days ago it was running sweet, I'm just wondering if its time for a new comp or whether or not it can be selvaged with help from a Pro. Compaq Pasario XP 1) System Restore - Can not perform this task, in Windows or Safe-Mode. 2) Windows Update - Download updates, get half way through install then it just closes down. On every start up Windows Update is still on the bottom right hand corner. *Because of this silly update not fully installing, I'm stuck with Service Pack 1, have ordered the disc and same thing happens. Threw it on my laptop and now thats up to date. 3) Start Up - After logging on I get this error "C:\WINDOWS\WinIogon.exe" something about the path isnt right and registery. 4) IE - Certain pages I view tend to disappear for no reason, error "..needs to close..." I send error report and what do you know, they havent any info on the problem. So if anyone out there can give me some advice on what to do, where to go, and how to go about it...would be muchly appreciated. |

| 400651 | 2005-10-31 09:07:00 | If its only a couple of years old then it should have some life left in it yet. It sounds like you have a multitude of issues. My reccomendation : back your data up, format the HD and do a clean install from your original OS disks. | Freejack (375) | ||
| 400652 | 2005-10-31 09:17:00 | Right! doing a big clean out may be another problem...see the disks were damaged a few months ago when we had flooding in the house. Luckily the comp was packed. This comp didnt come with the Recovery Disks I had to make them. Can a computer technician do this for me? |

On the side of your case is probably a Windows Key which needs to be entered when you reinstall Windows, you will need the correct version for the key. You could try contacting Compaq for a set of recovery disks... there may be a cost involved. Otherwise post back with the compaq model and your location and somebody on here may be able to help out more. |

He does wonders on comps but seems to take his time about things, next best option would be Hamilton..but then theyll be asking for an arm and a leg. | 400657 | 2005-10-31 10:22:00 | Your computer is only 2 years old so there is plenty of life left in it. I reakon you should ring Compaq or Hp as it is now and order a set of restore disks from them. These should cost you any where between $65 and $85 dollars depending on your model. Once you have them set you computer to boot from the cd rom in the bios and put in the restore disks let them do there thing. Providing there is nothing wrong with the hardware its self they should restore the computer back to the day it was new. Once you have done that and all is well then put the Microsoft sp2 disk in and let that do its magic. Once that is done jump on the internet and go to the Windows update site and get any more updates you may need. And hey presto your computer will be as good as the day you got it. I hope this helps you. Good luck |

| 400658 | 2005-10-31 10:30:00 | If my above post works for you. Do not forget to install some anti-virus AVG is a good free one. A firewall perhaps Zonealarm or Sygate personal firewall again these are free. A couple of Anti-spyware programs say Spybot 1.4 and Microsofts own Anti-spyware program again free. The above programs all work very well for me. Just remember to keep the Anti-virus progam upto date. | Glassman (5101) | ||
