400543 2005-10-31 03:14:00 This started recently, and is starting to get most annoying.
Every now and then when I try to go to a website, for example PressF1, it says:
"Sorry, www.pressf1.co.nz could not be found. Please try again or by selecting one of the below links..." (something to that effect). Above that, it says "quick browser search", plus I can see that name in the address field in front of the address I am trying to go to.

How do I get rid of this? I don't know where it came from, plus it's frustrating because I know the address I am trying to access does exist! NZherald, yahoo, and so on. If I close my firefox window, wait a few secs, and open a new window and try again, it usually works fine....until it stuffs up again.

Am using Mozilla Firefox, WinXP Pro.
TIA

400544 2005-10-31 04:03:00 Have you run a spyware scan on your computer yet ?
Also check in the Add/Remove programs and see if it is there ?
Does it happen in IE as well ?

400545 2005-10-31 05:35:00 Install and update Spybot. Then run it in safe mode

Emptying the cache in Firefox, as well as the cookies may have a beneficial effect as well (Tools>Preferences>Privacy)

Am downloading Spybot now, to scan the computer .
It's not in the Add/Remove so can't remove it from there .
I don't use IE so don't know if the same problem happens there - should I check or wait and do the spyware scan?

cheers,

400547 2005-10-31 19:18:00 OK, I just did a scan, it found nothing . . .
And I've cleared my cache as well .

Guess all I can do now is sit and wait and see if it's still there . . . .

400548 2005-10-31 19:23:00 Hmmmmm . . maybe a hijacker?

I use SpoofStick (http://www . spoofstick . com/) to detect these things . . it tell you in real time what the true URL is that you are visiting .

Get it for both Firefox and Internet Explorer .

400550 2005-10-31 22:06:00 Strange! I said earlier that i did a scan which showed nothing. I was kinda skeptical about that so I did another one, and what do you know - 5 things were found:
Connect MFC Application
FunWeb
FunWebProducts
MyWay.MyWebSearch
MyWebSearch

all have been fixed..hope that's the end of the problem

cheers for your help

400551 2005-11-01 01:06:00 All these are baddies:

Connect MFC Application
FunWeb
FunWebProducts
MyWay . MyWebSearch
MyWebSearch

As far as cleaning out cookies and internet trails and download tails . . I like to use CrapCleaner (http://www . ccleaner . com/) . It will do it all . . . in IE, Firefox, Third-party applications and all the crumbs of broken links and old . exe's .

You only have to goto the one place to use it instead of hunting all over your browsers and Internet Settings to clean it up . . which takes a lot longer .

Read the site page on that link and see what you think .

It's a shame that since we use Windows, we have to become security IT experts . (Please no flame-wars over this comment . . . we know Windows has security flaws) I use XP and like it . . and I wouldn't trade the forced education in security for a different opsys . Then again, I am old and senile and set in my ways .
