400979 2007-11-02 20:43:00 Hi fnphoto
What did you find the limitations of Lightroom to be ?
Misty
Not so much limitations as it is designed to work hand in hand with Photoshop. I use Lightroom 1.2 in place of Adobe Bridge for batch processing of photographs, global adjustments, exposure, contrast & tone adjustments. But when I want to do serious image editing ( retouching, using layers, text, masking, compositing or using filters i.e. deeper pixel editing) Photoshop is the one.

400980 2007-11-02 22:23:00 How does GIMP compare with Photoshop?
Does GIMP have a tool that selects whatever the mouse outlines, then adjust that selection for colour, contrast, etc?

Yes GIMP does that easily and a lot more. I find GIMP great for what I need and I also use Inkscape for any vector graphics

400982 2008-05-11 23:43:00 The best freebie is The Gimp, although IrfanView is very quick to start up and has some very good features although not as detailed as The Gimp.
I am finding Irfanview (lastest version 4.1) quite unstable. You can be working on an image and suddenly it decides to switch somewhere else etc. Anyone else finding that ?
It is very good for a free program - not deriding it but it just seems to have a bit of a mind of its own.

400983 2008-05-12 07:37:00 Misty - What specifically do you want to do with a free photo editor? Cosmetic touch ups? Create conceptual art work? Merge and apply special effects to different photo's? Design vector graphics?

As noted above - Photoshop including CS2/3, and their plugins, etc. For freeware, then the Gimp and perhaps to a lessor extent, these programs (pcsourcepoint.blogspot.com), which I describe...

Hi kawahai chaser
Eventually . . . . . . . . . once my Scottish cautiousness evaporates a little . . . . then I will buy something not too expensive, certainly not the full Photoshop ! I will probably buy Adobe Lightroom . However I have been reading the May 2008 Page 28 review of Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and got a bit entranced . However it seems that for me, as a relative beginner, Lightroom would be what I need . Cosmetic touch ups - yes probably a good description .

In the meantime Irfanview I have not yet mastered which is a slight worry . Also in consideration to those who have been in the same zone as I have been for most of my working life, I ask the question re Irfanview . Hope that makes some small sense !!

400985 2008-05-12 09:01:00 Hi Misty,

I have photoshop CS3 but do not use it all that often. Sometimes for me it is all that gets the job done.

Most of the time I use Paintshop Pro ver 9.

JASC PSP9 has been taken over by Corel but I did not upgrade as I have seen no need to at this time.

I guess once again it is over to individual choice and how much you want do to with the picture. It may also come down to the source like off a camera, scanner or the internet. The quality plays a part here. It also depends on what you want to do with the edited pics. Also think about whether the application will handle all of your needs not only now but in the future as your knowledge grows as I am sure it will.

400986 2008-05-12 09:04:00 Yep, I tried Photoshop CS3, last week

It installs too much crap, which you dont even need, and some of the programs / options in one of them arent available now .

I uninstalled it, and kept PSP X2 . Thats good enough for me

It lets me scan, and take snapshots from the webcam

I noticed that when I installed it - Adobe is getting carried away with "feature" bloat . CS2 still rocks .

400988 2008-05-12 09:15:00 Hi Misty,
not only now but in the future as your knowledge grows as I am sure it will.
Appreciate all comments from members, this is a particularly pertinent one as I have recently joined the North Shore Photographic Society, so am hoping that over the next year or two my knowledge will grow. Got to do something when I retire. Also want to do some cooking. Someone said they are both creative things, so maybe that is what I need.
Thanks again
