400384 2005-10-31 03:50:00 how drspy - how do you run a repairinstall? given the problems I mentioned

sarel
Like I said:
However, boot the PC off the Win XP CD. Choose ENTER at the first install option, choose R for REPAIR at the second install option.
This looks as if its reinstalling but it only reinstalls

Make sure in the BIOS - first boot is set to CD.

400385 2005-10-31 07:03:00 Yup - did all that - after all, I've been on this forum for a hell of a long time. Checked the bios - set for CD boot well enough.

This is the damnest thing I've ever seen and I hoped you guys would know how to solve it - I've tried everything I knew, that Google threw out and what I could glean from PF1 posts.

Seems as if a clean install would eb the only option. Sh*t, the wife is gonna kill me, some very nice piccies were on the HD and were not backed up.

What p*sses me off - I really did nothing wrong, just normal checking of PF1 and NZHerald and the next day this.

Thanks for that Jen - never thought about that. Will try and link it up to the wafe's laptop.

400388 2005-11-06 07:22:00 Hi guys''

This weekend we tried everything - changed CD-drives, got various bootCD's and Floppies - no luck - the bootCD is recognised on our lappie and although the CD driver light goes, there's no WinXP setup, etc. This is leading me to believe the Mobo is stuffed - everything is working on me son's PC. How do one check for a stuffed MOBO?

400389 2005-11-06 07:58:00 So you can't even get a boot floppy to be recognised? When you go into the BIOS, are the IDE devices correctly recognised?

Try resetting the BIOS to defaults (or even clear the CMOS by removing the battery for a few minutes). You will then need to go back and make sure the CD drive is set to boot before the hard drive again.

process of elimination........when you have ascertained that all other parts are working correctly and the problem persists then it's got to be a mobo fault.......

Yup, did that, even resetted the BIOS - CD drive still not recognised, although the CD drive works 100% on another PC. I just wondered, one thing I haven't checked was the small battery (I don't know what you call it) but I somehow do not think a flat battery fits into this scenario.

I even got a very old "master boot disk" (a floppy) from a friend that reinstalled a CDRom via a generic command - in DOS I can read the floppy, C,D and E drives (my partitions) but no luck with the CD. Running the CD on another machine - no problems.

Yeah, I kind of agree but I've never lost a Mobo before so I don't know the "symptoms" - I've lost a HD before so I've got a fair idea of that.

Slaving was a bit of a problem as we could not get a drive cable with two attachments - we will do that today but I seriously wonder whether that will be it.

Any other ideas would be welcomed

400393 2005-11-07 00:41:00 If you do not have the spare parts or a spare machine you can swap hardware around with for testing purposes, then I would suggest you visit your local friendly computer tech shop and let them look at it. They will also be able to backup your current files so that they are safe. :) Jen (38)
