400778 2005-11-01 00:49:00 I can not cope with the number of passwords I now have for so many websites . I can not remember most of my passwords let-alone usernames . It seems now that every time I go to a forum, instead of typing in a username/password, I now go straight for the "Password Reminder" form and get a new password sent to my email .

Before someone goes on about getting a browser or piece of software to remember my passwords, I switch between computers at home, work, cyber-cafes, parents, siblings, and other random computers .

Before people go on about keeping them in my email (online), I have a history of many different email accounts (before I settled on my current) which compicates things . Many of my passwords, I want to be a bit more secure than just leaving in an email .

I really do not want a "one password for all" idea because I know how many websites do not encrypt the passwords used and rouge webmasters might use my "one for all" password against me or for their own gain .

It does not help that I use the internet as part of my job .

Can not use password managers as I use lots of computers .

Does anyone have a solution?

The closest I have come is putting firefox on a flashdrive, but I do not think that this is that wise as apparently flash memory only has a limited number of times it can write (or so I am told) .

So other than putting my passwords onto a USB device, can anyone solve my password delemma?

400779 2005-11-01 01:02:00 Personally I stick to about 5 user names and 10 passwords . I mix 'n match for different sites . I also keep a printed list tucked away in a secure place as a reminder in case I forget what my logon or password is for a rarely used site . I don't leave them on my computer, but in most instances it would be of no use to anybody else to have them anyway .

IMHO you can very easily get too paranoid about logons and passwords, the reality is that if somebody wants to crack or hack their way into a site I use, the chances of them coming up with one of my combinations is fairly remote though I accept that it could happen .

I pay more attention to internet security via hardware & software .

Cheers

400780 2005-11-01 01:08:00 One evening on your computer, devote it entirely to going to all those websites and get a new password. Hopefully you'll get all the emails giving you new passwords that same night. [don't use email address you intend keeping]. Record them on a text file and put on a flash drive as 1 entry.
You can repeat this each month for any new sites that you have gathered.

If you are going to places you consider to be unsafe, then I would think it is a good thing you are renewing your passwords.

400781 2005-11-01 01:13:00 Well I added mine up once. There was about 38.
Stuff like this forum I wouldn't worry about too much.
So just pick some easy combo for things like that.
Moving up the secure sites, my supplier accounts and internet banking and stuff I have more secure logins and passwords and all of them are different.
I remember them by the fact of not having them saved anywhere, not writing them down and using them regularly.

400782 2005-11-01 01:23:00 I found that most of my passwords were for forums like this. So to fix this, I dicided to cut down on the number of forum logins I had to remember.

Here is how I solved the problem for myself:
- Run Firefox as your webbrowser
- Install the firefox extention for http://www.bugmenot.com/
- Bookmark forum threads you are interested in / have participated in
- Use the random usernames / passwords from bugmenot. (If you really want, you can state your nickname in each post so that other users can track your messages)

400783 2005-11-01 04:33:00 I don't like browsers storing passwords, so don't do this myself .

You don't want to put your passwords onto a USB pen as that is easy to lose . I actually have a note book (real paper variety :p) in which I record all login and password details for various websites . However, if that went missing I would be up the creek

If you just wish to use your memory to recall the passwords, why not use a code that is easy to remember and can be applied to all websites . For example, if you use the website URL in conjunction with your year of birth, or day/month alternating every character . First four letters of the URL, with four numbers .

Example:
pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz and if your birthday was 12th of July . This password would be pres + 1207 = p1r2e0s7
