400374 2005-10-30 05:57:00 Hiya guys

Been trying for the last week to fix this one, no luck as yet.

WinXP, 1.6Ghz. I haven't loaded or deleted anything - about a week ago I found the 'corrupted command.com" message and asking me to put the Windows disk in to fix this. The problem - nothing happens, I can't get the corrupted file changed because the PC will not accept anything. Booting up with Win disk - it reverts back to WinME messages. It will start up as far as the initial boot, no further. I can get into the F8 options but clicking on anything throws me back to the initial corrupted message. Using any other recovery disks - no help, I do not know whether it even see the disks. Even my backup disks can't be used - it refuse to read them (although the CD reader work). I'm stumped, really

I do not want to reinstall windows

Anything else I can try?

command.com isn't used to boot XP.

What do you mean it reverts to ME errors? What ME got to do with it?

However, boot the PC off the Win XP CD. Choose ENTER at the first install option, choose R for REPAIR at the second install option.
This looks as if its reinstalling but it only reinstalls the O/S files and leaves your stuff intact. That should fix any errors with the O/S.

400376 2005-10-30 07:39:00 That's just the problem - it doesn't want to boot - not from CD nor rescue disk. I just get nowhere and I've tried everything

I got no idea what ME is about - that's what I see trying to boot of the rescue disk.

400377 2005-10-30 08:01:00 You must be using a WinME rescue disc to boot with if you see a message about WinME. How is the disc labelled?

If you are seeing a message from the CD you are booting with, then that suggests it is booting off the rescue disc.

Did you upgrade from ME to XP with that machine?

It was a clean install on this machine, never saw ME. Rescue disk - I made it about three weeks ago (via XP). Even my back-ups don't want to work. This one is really puzzling, I must admit - and i do not think it's anything else like a virus because I check/update/whatever at least twice a week.

400379 2005-10-30 20:06:00 looks to me like it's a file in windows/system32 in xp........can you replace it from boot cd ?........otherwise i'd suggest running a repair install........ drcspy (146)
400380 2005-10-30 23:14:00 how drspy - how do you run a repairinstall? given the problems I mentioned

400381 2005-10-31 00:35:00 BOOT with xp cd then go thru the process as if to install xp again........then during the earlier stages of that process it'll ask you if you want to REPAIR an existing installation.......do that.........be careful or you'll end up wiping it and doing a clean install tho...... drcspy (146)
400382 2005-10-31 02:31:00 But as I said, the PC does not want to boot with the XP disk or the recovery disks or the backup disks, altho the CD drive is active
