401445 2005-11-02 22:12:00 Hey folks. I was wondering if anyone could help me?

My Compaq nx9005 laptop has worked fine for two years now but last week it began playing up. Twice it set its date to dd/mm/1905! And more worryingly has continually beeped and stalled in loading things. As it loads or even when its not loading it beeps and clicks and whirrs. What is happening to my machine. I look after it... or at least i thought i did!

Thanks very much

This causes the date to be reset after the power has been off for a while. This can also cause all the stored BIOS settings to be lost, so the BIOS has to do an autoconfigure when it is started.

If you've still got the manual, it might tell you how to change the battery. But it's likely to be meant as a "shop" job ... opening laptops takes a bit of skill. I've got one old Compaq laptop which is likley to never get the new battery. I opened it once to put in a "standard" 2032 cell only to find that it uses a 1220. Of course my favorite shop had 10 in stock, according to the computer, but none on the hook.
