401456 2005-11-02 22:04:00 Hi there!
I have changed keyboards when PC was on and after that it stopped responding. On control panel Keyboard, Keyboard properties-Hardware, there is no Device name.

Happened before, but after restart was ok. Other keyoard also don't work.
Without keyboard can't get to Bios or Safe start.

May be keyboard control chip goner and need new MBD?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

401457 2005-11-02 22:35:00 But after a restart it was OK?

So if you reboot now all is well?

I always change hardware over with comp turned off. And then allow it to go through 'detecting new hardware' on boot up.

HTH but I am a bit puzzled as to whether or not your keyboards work now.

401458 2005-11-02 22:40:00 I have another computer, luckily. The one that don't work is old and MOBO is EPox. OS is WinXP home taly (5956)
401459 2005-11-02 22:51:00 Have you tried starting from cold with another keyboard plugged in? In my experience you can just plug any keyboard into any comp (discounting wireless et al) and seems probelm free. I've swapped keyboards around all sorts of machines and never had any problems. mark c (247)

401461 2005-11-02 23:06:00 Hmmm. OK. Got me stumped. No keyboard. Can't update the mobo driver? mark c (247)

Check the plugs, make sure they are seated properly.

401463 2005-11-02 23:15:00 Hot swapping PS/2 keyboards and mice can result in controller failure, which I think you have discovered. There is no feasible repair. Terry Porritt (14)

That's a worry. I was thinking get an updated driver with the working comp and put it on a floppy and upload it with just the mouse.

(Intersting to see a confirmation of my feeling against 'hot-swapping'.)

401465 2005-11-03 00:25:00 But I've never had any permanent failure of keyboard ports. And I'm rough. :D

What I have (too often ;)) experienced is PS/2 keyboards which don't work because they are plugged into the mouse PS/2 port. They are not interchangeable. (Some laptops have a way to make a keyboard+mouse work in one PS/2 connector, but that';s a non-standard fiddle)
