| 401061 | 2005-11-01 19:31:00 | Hi guys I have been "given" a notebook running XP to sort out. It was a hideous mess, but the worst thing seems to be something called Winfixer. I have run Adaware, disabled a bunch of dubious services, installed Google toolbar to help with popups. However, if a website creates a new window in IE6, Winfixer gets its chance and goes silly and there are all of a sudden about three windows, an ad, a dodgy search page, and if lucky the window that was meant to open. Not having a lot of luck googling winfixer removal, half the sites seem just as dodgy as winfixer itself. Any ideas? robo. PS. Long time no see. |

| 401063 | 2005-11-01 19:54:00 | See if this does anything. securityresponse.symantec.com Read here first securityresponse.symantec.com And here securityresponse.symantec.com Or this is/was the previous name for it (Vundo) securityresponse.symantec.com And the removal tool securityresponse.symantec.com It looks like there are tools for Winfixer, and Vundo has something to do with it. |

| 401067 | 2005-11-01 21:42:00 | Tried Hijack this, it found tons of references, using dodgy DNS. It still goes made with additional windows though. Winfixer.com is one of them, there are plenty of others, including: www.qwikyLynx.com adopt.mediapro.com realarcade.com Funny thing is, it only seems to do it once, do nothing and they pop up like mad. Close them and it stops. Click to same window again and it behaves, but if you go to another site and come back to it, it will spawn them again. Highest count is 6 before I stopped them. I am not sure winfixer is necessarily the problem, or one of the symptoms. I have never seen anything so hideous to remove. I was pretty gentle on what I removed in Hijack, didn't remove processes unless I was sure. Anyone got any other ideas? robo. |

| 401070 | 2005-11-01 22:24:00 | Hi robo, nice to see you again . :) I am currently cleaning up a computer that has WinFixer, amongst other things, and Spybot has indicated that it is now gone after requiring a reboot/scan . The rest of my tool arsenal have yet to be run to see what other gremlins surface but it is looking good so far as I can now access Task Manager, etc . Quite a few Windows services were inaccessable prior to Spybot doing its thing . Give Spybot a whirl and see what happens . ;) |
