The (software setup) harm might have been done the first time you plugged it in. ;) Do whatever's necessary to uninstall the "External Drive" in the My Computer page. (Setting the system back to its state before it first saw the drive is the ideal.)

Do a cold start of the OS. Then, power up the drive, and plug it in.
