401497 2005-11-03 00:36:00 I’m running Win Me and all of a sudden have struck trouble with the installation of the automatic updates. I keep getting told the installation was successful but blow me down if it doesn’t download the same ones over and over again, each time advising that the installation was successful!

Well, O/E6 KB896688 has been successful no less than nine times, O/E6 KB837009 three times and ME KB888113 three times.

I’ve googled and checked the M/$ site but can’t find the answer.

Anyone any ideas?

(I’ve just seen a post by Tony that involves the KB896688 patch but that wont install and involves XP)

Yep. Stop trying to fix your PC when it isn't broken.

What problem do you have that requires the update.
See?

These are Microsoft security updates to hopefully prevent one having a problem .

401500 2005-11-03 04:28:00 It is a mixed blessing that users of Windows systems have got to be fairly good security twits too . It isn't all that horrible and the extra education is not for naught anyway .

B M: your problem is noted . . . and I had the same problem with 2000 on a friend's puter too . I have not noticed pc tek being flippant before . . . might be a bad hair day or something .

In my case it was that there was an update that got in out of sequence . . . I know there'll be some different opinions for me saying this . . but I swear that's what happened .

I quit 2000 and went to XP a few years ago, and had the same problem with it doing that once . . . but so far the only reason for the load-load-load-load and never getting it right or installed was the sequence .

Stay with the updates . . . there's a lot of superstitious rhetoric as to what is good for your system and not . . . but the updates are necessary .

Another problem I have noticed is that if you try to get the major patches too late in the life of the system, there is a certain amount of trouble that happens . Any time you do a reinstall . . . get all the Windows updates and hotfixes as fast as possible . . . . they seem to like getting into the system at the beginning . A good thing to do (esp for XP . . which I personally know of) is to get Micro$oft send you the cd-rom for SP-2 . It's free and gives you a boot-up for protection until you get things all up and running again .

A sidebar here: If you ever have to do a burn-down (fdisk and re-install) then you get a new lease on any of the major anti-programs that give you a free 3 or 4 month trial run . You will get a new trial period and that's enough to help protect you while you get the Windows ducks all lined up . I am quite sure there's SP's for 2000 too that can be had this same way .

I don't remember if you can get an internet connection in safe mode with 2000 or not like you can in XP-Pro . If so, try that too and see .

Just a Yank here, the noun, not the verb .
