2005-11-01 19:09:00 | Hi there gentle people! My broadband won't come back!! I am using a BT Voyager 205 that has a USB and Eithernet conections to it. The USB is working fine, but my side (the Eithernet) appears to be ill. It did work, but now does not, and to the best of my knowledge, I haven't touched it!! I have been on to BT and through a process of elimination it seems that all the hardware is working fine. Check list so far: 1 - Cable is not crossover 2 - BT 205 Modem/Router has been exchanged... and works 3 - NIC in my computer has been changed for new one... and works 4 - No ! or ? or X or / or what ever showing in 'System Manager' by NIC (ieg drivers loaded/working OK) 5 - NIC light on [connection OK I think!?!?!?] 6 - Modem/router Eithernet light on [conection OK I think again!?!?!] 7 - USB connection still working fine (he types with gritted teeth  ) So it has now been sugested that it may well be something to do with Winblows XP itself. Can I reload/repair XP, or at least just the networking side of things, or could this be a 'professional thang'??? Many regards to you all, and let me be the first to wish you a happy Easter 2006! :D The Cell

2005-11-01 19:35:00 | if it WAS workin and aint now try system restore back to the date it was workin ? | drcspy (146) | |
2005-11-02 00:03:00 | Type ipconfig at the command prompt to see if your NIC is connecting to your modem. If so the modem's ip address will show up as the default gateway. If not try this: Control panel Network connections Right click Local area connection Properties Scroll down to TCP IP & highlight Properties Select Obtain IP address automatically OK out of all that & reboot If that gets you nowhere try to find another installation disk for your modem (or download from the manufacturer's website) as sometimes the disks can contain corrupt data.

2005-11-05 16:37:00 | Hi there all! drcspy: And there in lies another (but most likely seperate) thread! Although I do restores fairly regularly (usually just before the updates of my antivirus, spyware and adware programs, and that's nearly everyday depending on if I've been on the net) when I went to do a restore there was only one which was done after the problem arose (yes alright I did go on the net a couple of times with out checking for updates, I'm sorry!) . Nothing at all before that! Not sure what I've done there . Looked at the settings, but couldn't find anything to say 'dump restores after certain amount of days' (like the 'History' in IE) . :groan: NIGGEL: I'm reading this down at my Mums, so will print this off and give that a whirl . But to be honest, I think I've been down that isle with 'Uncle BT Helpline' . Not sure it worked then . But will give it a go any way . Also once home, I'll go upstairs and check for newer drivers for the NIC . Say, should I need to download the modem drivers if I'm going through a NIC??? Will do that as well any way! Regards again so far . The Cell :D

2005-11-05 19:21:00 | I do restores fairly regularly (usually just before the updates of my antivirus, spyware and adware programs, and that's nearly everyday depending (yes alright I did go on the net a couple of times with out checking for updates, I'm sorry!). Why would you do a restore all the time? Its there to fix problems that may arise after installing something. And updates certainly don't protect you from anything. You should have: 3rd party Firewall, properly configured Several anti-spyware programs Anti-virus And preferably 3rd party browser and email programs Then you're reasonably protected.

2005-11-07 23:08:00 | pctek Wow! What can I say? Thank you so much. You say: Why would you do a restore all the time? Its there to fix problems that may arise after installing something. Well I thought that the more times I did a restore, the more chance I'd have of pinning down the exact thing that went wrong!! If I only did a restore once a month, then there are up to a possible 31 days worth of possible errors, of which any one up to 31 days ago could have caused the problem!! Hmm! I may have to revise my regular 'clean up' sessions! And updates certainly don't protect you from anything I was under the impression that updating my antivirus, spyware, advert killer and firewall very regularly is a must! But you say they would do no good! Well I'm not sure I believe that, but I bow to your knowledge and will only do updates with less frequency now. Usually every time I go online, I do a quick check for updates on the four programs above. :( Ah well, the computer world changes so quickly nowadays! :illogical As for the 3rd party browser and email programs, well I've had no problems with IE and Outlook so far, but may well look at some mags to see what are the better ones to go for. I thank you in advance again. The Cell :D

2005-11-08 00:36:00 | Maybe Winsock damage? You could try downloading and running this little repair program, as it won't do any damage at all, nor change things. Available from cexx.org (www.cexx.org)

2005-11-09 12:12:00 | I had something similar happen to me. Stopped working through the LAN bit but was ok using the USB connection. Eventually tracked it down to a re-flashing of my BIOS. Needed to go into the BIOS and re-enable the LAN connection. Just a thought.
