| 401023 | 2005-11-02 00:56:00 | Hi I am contemplating installing Linus on my storage Hdd . Right . . . well you have lots of reading coming up . ;) A good place to start is Google ( . google . com) or the forum's own Linux FAQ (http://www . pressf1 . co . nz/showthread . php?t=48706" target="_blank">www . google . com) or the forum's own Linux FAQ (http:) . Sorry if it is not the answer you were wanting but people just don't have time to repeat all the basic info that is available out there if you look . When you have read as much as you can and are still stuck come back and ask for more specific help . Have you decided what distro of Linux you plan to use? My recommendation is Mepis which boots from a live CD to begin with and is then installed on your hard drive from the "Desktop" . It will partition and format your hard drive for you . Do a search on this forum for "Mepis" and you will find heaps of info to get you started . |

| 401024 | 2005-11-02 02:40:00 | You can dual boot Windows and Linux (ie they can both be on the same harddrive in different partitions, you just use one at a time). Ideally, you should ask around , see if anyone uses linux near you, have a look at there system, ask questions. Then get a live cd distro (mepis, knoppix) reboot your computer to the livecd, and have a play around... see if you like it. (LiveCD means it runs an O/S using your system RAM, it doesnt install to harddrive unless you tell it to) Then, if you still want to install it, read some more, choose the distro you think appeals to you, and install. You can if you want install one of the LiveCD distros you were playing with in the previous step Above all ... read, and ask. There are some great forums around, people in this forum are very helpful with Linux (esp the mods), and if you are into IRC, there are some great chans around. |

| 401025 | 2005-11-02 03:57:00 | Just remembered something: if you are in or can get to Auckland there is a Linux Fest coming up early next month where you will be able to get some help with installing Linux on your computer. See this thread (www.pressf1.co.nz) for more details. |

| 401027 | 2005-11-02 08:47:00 | Hi I am contemplating installing Linus on my storage Hdd. I am not really sure that Linus would really want to be installed on your hard drive. Linus Torvalds is the guy that wrote the first Linux kernel - so it is Linux you are wanting to install, not Linus :) |
