401891 2005-11-06 22:48:00 Given that it is a router without a hardware firewall built in (since one of the computer guy said it does not have), how can one use software firewall to protect this network? This is really the queston I am after, with software firewall such as Zonealarm, Kaspersky, McAfee, or Norton. Any further suggestions. Thanks. lightfoot (39)

401893 2005-11-07 10:41:00 Personally I recommend 'M0n0wall' - it's a FreeBSD based firewall solution, and I have yet to find a better one. Has every feature you could ever want in a firewall, will run on almost anything x86 based, and needs no HDD. Download size: about 5.5MB disk image. Entire configuration saved to one XML file, configured using web browser. I run it on P100/64MB. Extremely fast too - most people don't realise that the FreeBSD network stack runs faster than the Linux one, thus making it ideal for a firewall.

Forget XP's firewall. Its ok but wont stop outgoing traffic, if u get a trojan.
